Partition Magic

I am trying to partition my HD which has Vista Home basic in order to create
a install for Linux. On XP, I used Partition Magic which worked well,
however Vista will not allow this to run as it apparantly incompatible even
though this is an NTFS file system, the size of the HD is 120 GB and there
is currently 77 GB free. I don't think memory is an issue as I have 1300 MB
free. I think Linux has an EXT file format which was possible to create on
Partition Magic. The website for this program has no info on an upgrade for
Vista so I am wondering if anyone knows of a partitioning program that is
compatible with Vista or if it is recommended that you try a Linux
installation by using their partition program. I want to make sure that
there are no errors that could wipe out the contents of Vista and other than
installing on a 2nd drive, the safest bet might be to format first before
installing Linux. Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

IIRC, Symantec bought out PowerQuest (Partition Magic and Drive Image).
Support for Drive Image is marginal at best and the latest version (7) is
not compatible with Vista. Ghost V12 seems to be the current king of the
imaging crop. I just ordered a package from Fry's. All I wanted Partition
Magic V8 and Ghost V12. Fry's has a deal going that gives you Norton
Internet Security (gag), Partition Magic V8, and Ghost V12 for $70. Now get
this! There are two rebates good for $70 so The cost of the package is 0!
nada, nothing! I plan to sell the Internet Security junk on eBay so I will
net a gain - money in the bank. Can't get better than that.
*But* you better hurry over to Fry's because I think the deal might expire
today.

Ed Forsythe

Ah, but I'll be dual booting Vista Ultimate and XP Pro and PM8 *is*
compatible with XP is it not? The bottom line is I need Ghost 12. The Fry's
deal provides me with two apps + Ghost12 - FREE!

But if you create a partition for Vista, using Partition Magic 8, you "will"
have problems. Unfortunately, they may not show up until you have invested
many hours in building up your system. Then you will be forced to start
over, creating a Vista partition using either the Vista install program or
another compatible utility.

Based on my experiences trying to use PM 8 to work with Vista partitions
(back in the days of Vista RC1, which I had dual booting with XP Pro, where
PM 8 was installed), heed Richard's warning!

If you want a partition utility that's safe with Vista, get Acronis Disk
Director (Version 10, Build 2160 or later).

Richard, of course I won't create a partition using PM. I agree that would
be inviting disaster. Vista allows me to resize the current XP partition and
install Vista on another partition which Vista creates. All of this is done
during the Vista Ultimate install. Am I correct?

There is really no need to use PM. Virtually all modern Linux distros
include repartitioning as a part of the install process. If you're still
reluctant, try booting the Gparted Live CD - that will handle everything.
FYI - ext2/3 is one option for Linux - there are others. I use Reiserfs on
nearly everything. It is always a good idea to backup stuff first - what
if the power dies? It's recommended to defrag any MS system first before
resizing.

You can manage the XP o/s, extended dos/logical Ntfs and Fat32 partitions in XP with PM8 or XP's Disk Management. If you later install Vista as the second o/s and have two separate drives, with the intent to dual boot use XP's Disk Management to leave unallocated space, preferably at the beginning of the second drive prior to installing Vista and install Vista to that unallocated space.

Once complete you can not use PM8 to manage the Vista paritition or later Vista Disk Management's created partitions.

If you run PM8 in XP, and it says it found an error on the Vista drive and offers to repair, do not, repeat do not, let it repair.!! You will damage the offset Vista uses for its unique approach to ntfs.

Possibly not if you don't format the partiton. Boot into Vista or XP
and let disk manager do the format.

How do you create a partition with Partition Magic 8 and have it NOT format
the partition? That function was one of the BIG selling points of PM. It
removed the step where you had to reboot just to re-enter a program (think
the format command- under DOS) to format the partition you just created.

I have been using PM for about 12-14 years and every partition I have
created in those 12-14 years were automatically formatted - with SOME file
system! You have to choose a format, whether it be DOS, fat16, fat32, NTFS,
HPFS etc.

You can't create a partition without it formatting said partition. Now, if
I have missed something through all these years please tell me. I am eager
to learn.

Even if you create a partition under PM as FAT32, and choose to install
Vista to that partition - reformatting the partition to NTFS during the
install of Vista (using the advanced install option) - you will run into
problems. It is the partition structure/creation itself that causes
problems. You ***do not*** have this problem when using Acronis Disk
Director to create/format a partition for Vista.

Until someone proves to me otherwise, I will counsel people to not allow
Partition Magic to touch a partition (in any way) that holds Vista.

I have created partitions using PM 8.05 and installed Vista on it. No
problems at all. 3 different machines.

Allow me to ask - was this the only partition on the drive or was it a 2nd
or 3rd partition? Also, where was it's physical location in relation to the
other partitions?

Maybe Norton has finally gotten their act together. I was speaking of
Partition Magic as it was under PowerQuest.

PM 8.01, the last version from PowerQuest (that many people try to use -
because they have it) does not work.

In one case it was the only partition, in the others it was one of
multiple partitions. In the multiple partitions cases, it was the
first partition.

In all cases I formatted during creation in PM as NTFS 3.1 (XP), then
re-formatted for Vista when installing Vista.

I am going to have to be certain to specify Partition Magic 8.01 or earlier
in my posts. Your version sounds capable, although I still don't want
anything from Symantec touching my machines. (-:

Winston, I don't think you understand. I don't intend to use PM8 for
anything. I already have a XP Pro box and I intend to install Vista Premium
so that I may dual boot XP and Vista. As I understand it I can do all that
is necessary (make a new partition, resize the XP partition etc.) during the
Vista install.

You can manage the XP o/s, extended dos/logical Ntfs and Fat32 partitions in
XP with PM8 or XP's Disk Management. If you later install Vista as the

First I've heard of any version of PM that *might* be safe to use with
Vista, too.

Perhaps the issue is that you can't safely resize/move/change a Vista
partition, but you can certainly create one. That's all I have done,
create Vista partitions with PM. I haven't tried to resize one, as I
assumed it would not work.

I wish you would try that so we can put this to bed - once and for all. (-:

We all know that Acronis Disk Director Suite ver 10.0.2160 will do all of
that without causing any problems.

Until I am 100% certain that the latest version of PM will also succeed at
the resizing/moving/combining tasks I can not, in good faith, recommend it.
In fact, based upon what I have found out so far I would have to condemn it.
