Partition Magic Critical Seek Error 46

Q

quanghoc

I got Critical Seek Error 46 after I used Partition Magic 8 to create
a new primary NTFS. Now my WinXP won't boot up. It got in the Windows
XP boot up screen but start to reset right away. I used the Partition
Magic boot disk and found out the error 46. Now I cannot do anything.
I cannot fix the error, cannot resize, merge... The boot partition is
totally corrupt. It's not even visible for me to access to backup the
files. I cannot get in C:\ drive at all. Is there anything I can do to
fix this?? Any help would be nice. I don't want to delete it and
format the whole drive.

Thanks

Sorry, but the warning about making complete backups in the PB
dialog is not a joke at all. PM frequently fails to do its
job and typically leaves things broken in these cases. I don;t
think the problem can be fixed with reasonable effort.

Exactly, babblebot, you don't, as always.

Have you tried booting into safe mode?

If that doesnt help...I've had good results with Partition Table Doctor
which might be worth a
try...

Regarding the backup files you cannot access, what did you use to create
these and where are they located?

Always good to use a backup utility which provides access and recovery
options via a bootable CD/floppy etc

If there's a lot of data to backup then a second HDD is one of the fastest
ways to do it (either internal/external/mobile caddy).

Yep we all need to get burned once or twice and sometimes lose data to learn
the lesson of testing the reliability of our backup method - and preferably
before you actually need to use it

FWIW I've not had PM kill anything on my system but I've read lots of
messages where others, like yourself have been less fortunate.

I hope PTD can get it back for you.

Let us know

Good Luck

Ian
