Partition Magic alternative ?

Is there a stable and reliable freeware equivalent to Symantec's Partition
Magic. I am trying not to give money to Symantec, it just encourages them.
Thanks.

QtParted works and is available on some Linux Live distros such as Mepis
and Knoppix. Also, you can get it when using System Rescue CD.

Yes, quite.

The answer is no. However the most definitely is a non-free
alternative - one that is far better, if rather techie, far less
ridiculously priced, non-bloatware, with a non-idiotic GUI.

However, this is a freeware group...

I agree, some programs you just can't find an equivalent in freeware,
BootItNG has no equal, a bit of a learning curve though.

Thanks for replies. Yep sometimes you have to bite the bullet and pay I just
would prefer leaness of program which is rare from the big houses.

Oh man, the BING! $%^&
Now that is some software!
I purchased it about three years ago.
One of the best software purchases I have ever made.

To keep it on topic though, there is some useful freeware proggy's on
their site too.

Savepart. Some time ago a friendly soul posted a very useful manual in this

Partition Resizer http://www.zeleps.com/

"the Partition Resizer v1.3.4

The popular freeware partitioning program is back! The first free program
to resize and move partitions without data loss, is now more complete, with
support for disks up to 2TB of size.

New features include:

Int13 extensions support allows handling of disks up to 2TB (2048GB) of
size.
New Resizing/Moving engine with simpler inerface. Move and resize your
partitions in one step.
Transparent extended partition resizing (no more confusion with extended
partitions).
Command line parameters for accessing advanced options (read-only
operation etc.).

Partition Resizer is a small DOS executable, which requires no
installation, and can perform, all these tasks in a short while, giving you
the opportunity to re-arrange your partitions safely, quickly and
fuss-free."

That is entirely possible to run your computer completely successful
with ONLY freeware stuff? ... and, you can still deal with MOST stuff
thrown at you by Microsoft-generated programs? .. and, even answer
or made editions to them.

I am ecstatic!

You can create a 2-disk floppy set for Partition Magic, pretty lean :)
A tad safer than making major changes within Windows.

IMHO, *any* freeware partition resizing app has to be better than
"Partition Tragic" (thanks to the National White Collar Crime Center
instructors for that moniker). Too many heartaches of trashed
partition tables for me. Recognizing that this is a freeware group,
the salient search would be for one... "similar to the Acronis
partition management product" (my quotes). That one (whisper) works
just fine.

Well, the one thing you MUST do before using a disk partitioning and
resizing application is read the help file and documentation. So, I
wouldn't be too hasty to label someone a troll because they are having
problems. You can learn word processing on the fly and have little
damage. Not so when you are messing with disk partitions. like you
have used partition Magic since version 3 and have never had a problem
I didn't cause or wasn't the result of a damaged or faulty hard drive.
PM, gparted, Ranish and so on warn you to back up your data before
using them for a reason.-

Well, I have used PM 5.0 and 8.0 and in both cases it is COMPLETELY
unable to do ANYTHING with the partition table on one of my drives -
it can't read it so badly it just comes up with a generic error
message that the Help file says basically means it's totally screwed
and has no idea what to do next.

Windows 2000, XP (and 98 before them) and Red Hat Linux 7.3 ALL have
absolutely NO problem with the drive. Neither does parted, or
BootItNG or Ranish.

The ONLY program that cannot do ANYTHING with the partition table is
Partition Magic - supposedly the leading software for partition
management. LOL!

This scenario ALONE is reason enough to distrust it. If the leading
partition manager cannot even TRY to read a partition table that at
least four other partition managers CAN read, you know there's a
serious problem with that software.

Richard,
As I asked before, what does your partition table look like?

I'd really like to know. And not because I am pushing PM, it just
intrigues me.

Cheers,
Gary B-)
