how do i partition my hard drive and set up a dual boot system so i can run
another os?

Assuming you have no free space;
You use the winxp cd, this of course will delete your current partition and
all data.
Or you use a third party tool, eg Partition Magic

Or, you can get a Win98SE Floppy Disk from www.bootdisk.com and use
fdisk to partition and format. Depending on the
OS, if it's Win9X, ME install that first. If it's WinVista or Linux
then install WinXP first. You will need at least two
partitions, three for a swap disk in Linux.

You need to allow at least 14+GB of space for WinXP. Assuming you have
checked the system hardware for the second OS, you begin as follows; start
your PC with the setup CD in the tray, follow onscreen prompts to install the
second OS. After installation is complete, reboot and the bootloader should
show WinXP and your second installation. Use arrow keys to highlight your
system choice and log in.

Good luck.

Partition magic = US$ 45 or another harddrive $45. Best scenario is to use
a mobile rack.
