Parameter is incorrect

Hello,
Background info:
I just recently uninstalled Trend Micro PC-cillin so I could install the new
version. During the first reboot, my PC indicated that some bad clusters
where found on my F:\ drive and it was running Chkdisk. It made three passes
and indicated that the bad sectors were being marked.

Now when I reboot my machine, (which takes forever) and go into DOS to check
my F: drive, I am getting "Parameter is incorrect".

I checked through Google and could not find any specific solution for this
error, well at least one I wouldn't have to pay a fee to see. I checked the
Microsoft Knowledge base, and also Maxtor. The drive is partitioned (40GB)
and was formatted NTFS. It is orginally an 80GB hardrive and is about 3
years old.

Does anyone know a way to fix this error or know of some software utility
program that can be obtained, free or otherwise to correct this problem.

If worse comes to worse, I can reformat the partition. However, if I don't
have too, I rather not. Had I gotten my "round tuit", I would have backed up
the one folder I had been meaning to backup that resides on that drive.
Installing software is no big deal.

The drive may have failed. Download and run a diagnostic utility from the
drive manufacturer's web site.

Thanks Dave for responding. After I posted this message, my drive went from
bad to worse.

I did check the drive with a Maxtor utility and it indicated the drive was
failing.

I was able to use another hd and load Win2K and then connect both my hd's
and recover most of my data. Of course, the one drive partition I wanted to
get to most I could not. I get "inline page operation" message now. I did
get four years use out of it. The data I lost can be recovered through other
means, it's just a time consuming process.

It's funny I can see the drive through My Computer. I can see it when I look
under Admin Tools it reports as Healthy(Active) with the full partition size
28GB, but the formatting type is blank. When I look at the drives under the
Disk Fragmenter it does not show. It's like the partition has been wiped
clean. Well, another lesson learned, make your "round tuits" the priority.

Of course, this failure gives me an excuse to go buy a new computer as this
one is a 400 Mhz, and I still have my laptop, so I am not totally dead in
the water

Yes, they normally last longer but you can never tell.
