Parallel to USB cable for printer doesn't work

I just bought my mom a new pc and we realized it doesn't have a parallel
port. She bought a parallel to usb cable but I can't get it to work. This is
the port I selected during install.

USB001 | Virtual printer port for USB

When I try to go to the ports option and configure it says:
An error occured during port configuration. This operation is not supported.

Has anyone had success getting one of these to work?

Yes - it greatly depends on the drivers for the printer in many cases...
Gone to the printer manufacturer's web page and downloaded the latest
version of the drivers for your printer/OS combination and installed them?

However - more often than not - if you have to buy adapters to make a
peripheral work - it's time to consider a newer alternative. ;-)

You mean a USB to Parallel port converter, not the other way around.

These often do NOT work. They have a dependence upon the USB chip-set used so you have at
best a 50-50 chance of it working. I bought one once and it worked fine on an Intel 815
chip-set but failed on an Intel 845 chip-set.

I suggest obtaining a PCI card with a parallel port to support the printer.

Another option, if you have a SOHO LAN, is a HP Print Server.
