paragraph symbol

Word 2003, how do i prevent the paragraph symbol from
appearing on the page as i am working on it.
 
Click on the Show/Hide Button on the Standard toolbar to switch it to Hide. It looks like a backward 'P' (the symbol is called a Pilcro). If you don't see it, click on the button at the end of the toolbar to reveal your hidden buttons

Menu: Tools/Options, Tab: View, Formatting marks section. Uncheck
"Paragraph Marks", and ensure "All" also unchecked.
