Paragraph Alignment with Bullets and Numbering

I am having a whole lot of trouble trying to set the paragraph alignment to
the first set of bullets of my document. Example:

1. .............................................
a)....................................
b)....................................
....................................

I would like my paragraph lines (when broken off to next line) to be here:

1. ............................................
a)...................................
b)....................................
.................................................

Directly lined up with the first set of bullets and numbers posted.
I tried to mess with the bullets and numbering tab and recognized they had a
format exactly the way i wanted my document to be. However, the document is
already formatted a different way, and when i try to re-format it, the text
and spacing of the lines (along with the positioning of the bullets and
paragraphs) changes completely.
I am extremely stumped and need assistance as soon as possible....
