Anybody familiar with this program. would appreciate some help. I am
receiving error message,"cannot communicate with TWAIN device."Tried
Paperport KB with no success. I know I may be in the wrong forum, but have
exhausted all efforts to correct this problem.
Thanks for any comments, help.

I've had that error when my scanner was unplugged.

TWAIN: An industry-wide interface standard for scanners, fax machines,
copiers, digital cameras, and other imaging devices. PaperPort supports any

I believe it means PP cannot 'see' a twain device (scanner)
Perhaps a reinstallation of PP?

Thanks all for your comments and replies.I have gone back and re-installed
software to the original CD with no luck, even tried a couple restore
points. I keep coming up error, "cannot communicate with twain device." I
can use icon in the task bar to scan into any folder but when I click on
scan from the Paperport desk top is when I get the error message. One KB
article said the cause was when the scanner is locked, which it's not. Hate
to give up on it because it serves my purpose nicely.

In PP, tried the FILE menu|SELECT SOURCE, and selecting the correct device?
(The version here may be somewhat different than your own.)

Hi Old Man :),

Did you apply all available Paperport updates for your particular
version? Are you running the latest Visioneer Driver for your scanner? It is
dated 7-26-2002 and the filename is 8600.exe. The exact version of the
driver, I don't have because I am not using that Visioneer Scanner Model. I
have the 7600.

When you previously uninstalled your Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Scanner,
did you do it using Custom or Automatic?

Also did you remove the following folder? C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\paprport\

Uninstall link:
http://www.nohold.net/noHoldCust9/P...id=d688486daa3d4f73b11bd594fa6a9a1b_clean.xml

When you reinstall the scanner and Paperport, what order did you do them
in?

I have the 7600.
According to Paperport and scansoft, Nuance, I have the latest drivers.
When you previously uninstalled your Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Scanner,
did you do it using Custom or Automatic?

Used Automatic installation, onetouch 8600 disk followed by Scansoft Version
9.0 software.
Scanner appears in imaging devices in Manager says it's working properly
passes diagnostic test.
Also did you remove the following folder? C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\paprport\
Did not remove above mentioned folder. Would removing folder now benefit me.
Did a remove and re install of software from link you provided and also did
the same from a remove and re install from version of paperport disk as
suggested before re instlling paperport v9.0.
Can use keys from scanner or icon in the right side of task bar just can not
use scan button from paperport desk top.

the creator,

No conflicts appear in device manager, shows working properly. Appears in
control panel under scanners and camera, passed diagnostic test.

In add remove programs I have a listing for programs, OneTouch 2.0,
PaperPort 9.0, Visioneer 8600 Scanner OneTouch 2.2. No folder
twain_32\paprport\ exists in C:\Windows

Hi Old Man :),
No folder twain_32\paprport\ exists in C:\Windows

Okay do this:
Uninstall Paperport and then uninstall the Visioneer One Touch Scanner.
Reboot.

Again look in C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\ folder for the Paperport or Visioneer
One Touch and remove the folder, if found. Also search for Paperport under
C:\Program Files\Scansoft\Paperport and remove them as well.

Using Regedit, delete this key and its sub-keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ScanSoft\PaperPort
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ScanSoft\PaperPort

Reboot the computer.

Do not connect the Visoneer One Touch before installing its drivers,
since it is USB Connection.

Install Paperport first, via Custom install to set Paperport Desktop
folder and reboot. Do not Start Paperport up.

Now install the Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Driver. Reboot the computer.

Once rebooted, plug the scanner back in and let Windows find the
scanner. Once found and installed, reboot.

Now once rebooted Start Paperport up. Don't worry about the program
operation yet. But check in the program for latest updates. There should be
3 updates for Paperport 9.0 Deluxe version. Not sure how many for just
Paperport 9.0 version. Reboot after each update. Once completely up-to-date,
use Explore and go to C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort and find initwain
and click it. Close Explore.

Start Paperport. Set preferences. Open Paperport to folder to scan to.
Select Source or Scanner to use. Click Scan, which should launch the
Visioneer OneTouch Scan Manager. Try scanning.

the creator,

Thanks for your continued replies and interest in helping resolve the issue.
All your suggestions have been attempted at least twice, to no avail.
As to updates, I have been informed I have the latest. Sites also have
posted messages regarding Onetouch scanner as listed , end of life message.
Windows folder only lists twain_32.dll not twain_32.
I don't know what corrupted my paperport program, but I have suspicion that
while the program existed when I upgraded to WIN XP or one of its updates
there was no conflict, but re-installing the program to WINXP seems to have
created a problem. Scansoft and their new company Nuance also state that
upgrading to new version of scansoft can't be done if you have a problem
with current version, without going to more effort then you suggest.

Thinking maybe new scanner might be in offing, like Epson, if I could
transfer and use data from Paperport.

Thanks again.

Hi Old Man :),

You upgraded overtop of an existing operating system to Windows XP,
while Paperport was installed? That is a No/No.

Your Visioneer OneTouch 8600 is still fine and will work with Paperport.

Decision Time: Choices: Buy a new Scanner which may or may not work with
Paperport after you are done.

Or, bite the bullet. Back up your Favorites, Address Book, E-mails, My
Documents Folder and its Sub-folders and other programs Data files. Save
everything off of the partition that Windows XP is currently installed in.

Reformat and reinstall Windows XP. Then update Windows XP to Service
Pack 2 and fully update the program with Windows Updates including optional
Updates, then you may wish to burn an image of the operating system as is to
a set of CD-Rs or CD-RW disks, before you re-install other programs.

You can always buy a new Hard Drive also, and install Windows XP onto it
without the need to backup information already there. Make that you new
Drive C:\ partition. Then use the other drive for your My Documents folder.

Problems occur because users install overtop existing operating systems.
The programs installed were installed into the old operating system for
running into that operating system, not for running in Windows XP. Always do
a clean install of a new operating system.

the creator,

Rather then bite the bullet and reformat my drive which could cause to lose
a ton of software and information, it's a bit drastic because of corrupted
scanner and software, I have a laptop that I could install scanner and
software, my only concern is if I can copy, transfer data and folders that I
now have on my desktop unit. As it is now I can access the information on
the program in the desktop unit but scanning new information is a bit of a
hassle.

Hi Old Man, :)

If you have a program like Quik Sync 3 from Iomega, you can move your
entire My Documents folder to another computer, provided the Hard Drive is
large enough with enough free Space to accept the Data Transfer of the
files. I have done it from a Wired Computer thru a Router to my Wireless
Computer.

Iomega no longer makes Quik Sync 3, but replaced it with Iomega
Automatic Backup Pro software.

You could also upgrade to a new version of Paperport. The latest is
Paperport 11 and Paperport 11 Professional which comes with ScanSoft PDF
Creator 3.0 included.

Do you have a Windows Registry Cleaner? Have you tried that to see if it
helps?

Lots of choices.

I don't consider myself computer literate nor am I a newbee.
I have seen many comments on registry programs in newsgroups and many have
negative comments regarding them especially to non computer experts. Your
previous post regarding making changes in the registry are way beyond my
abilities to delve into the registry. over the years I have come to depend
on my unit for programs, like MS MONEY, to jeopardize WINXP with corruption
or not booting. It hasn't happened often but when I develop a problem with
my machine I learned, be safe then sorry. Fools rush in where angels fear to
tread.
Will mull over the decision mentioned. Maybe something will develop to
correct my existing problem. Reason for wetting is my laptop drive is only
40 GB.

PaperPort 9:

Note: These steps include modifying items in the Windows Registry. If you
are running a Windows NT 4.0, 2000 or XP system, confirm that you are logged
on as the Administrator for all of these steps. Please follow each step
carefully:

1.. Open the Registry Editor by clicking "Start > Run". Type in "regedit"
without the quotes and click "OK".
2.. Export a backup copy of your Registry in case problems occur during
the following procedures by going to:
a.. Windows 98SE, 2000, and ME: Registry menu > Export registry file.
b.. Windows XP: File > Export Registry File.
3.. Save this file to the Windows Desktop and name the file "backup". (You
can keep "backup" for a few days and if all is well, this file can be
deleted.)
4.. Navigate to the following location in the Windows Registry, by using
the plus sign (+) next to a folder to expand its contents.
a.. Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\ScanSoft\PaperPort\TWAIN\Config\
5.. Locate the value located on the right side that correspondes to your
scanner model. Right-click on this value and choose "Modify". Change the
Value data field to "M" without the quotes. Click OK to save the changes.
6.. Exit out of the Windows Registry Editor.
7.. Restart the computer and attempt to scan again.
8.. If the problem still exists, try changing the value in step 5 to
either "F" or "MF" without the quotes.

the creator,
Appreciate your comments on the above statements.
In Config it does not list my Scanner.
First line ( default) no value
Primax PaperEase C
SheetFed Scan 2.10 B
Sony Digital Camera DC

Hi Old Man, :)

C:\WINDOWS\twain_32

Use Explore but first, make sure that your Visioneer OneTouch 8600 is
currently plugged into the USB Port and ON.
Navigate to that folder on the left side in Tree mode and click the +
sign to make it a - sign. If installed correctly, the Visioneer Twain
Drivers should be located under Twain. Also click on Twain itself to open up
the folder to see the files and folders in the right window of Explore.

If the drivers aren't there, Paperport can't find the scanner.

Comments: I don't like to Export the Windows Registry at all. I would
rather repair using a Windows Registry Cleaner like TuneUp Utilities 2006
which has a 30-day free Trial Offer. You can learn about the program from
this link:
