Paper types, inks and profiles matter

I consider myself moderately knowlegeable about calibration, color gamut and
printing issues: that means I have spent a small fortune trying to match the
monitor to the print. After another expensive and frustrating round of
unsatisfactory Epson 1280 prints I did some more testing of paper types and
inks.
To my chagrin:
I have to believe that there must be counterfeit Epson branded ink
cartridges out there because depending on the vendor colors can vary widely
from cartridge batch to cartridge batch. Many internet discounters are
selling Asian branded OEM Epson cartridges that just don't print the same as
genuine, meaning much more $ Epson cartridges purchased from reliable retail
sources. The side by side comparisons are unreal. I now have two color
cartridges I consider unusable.
Either that or Epson manufacturing quality control really sucks.
The only Epson supplied profile for their papers that seems reliable is for
Epson Premium Glossy paper (this is not the stuff you can buy for reasonable
prices at Costco).
And every time I am about to throw this printer against the wall I get a
batch of really good prints which remind me why I like Epson better than
Canon or HP: they look like they were just pulled out of the soup, a wet
process color print with controlled contrast.
