PAINT won't work:

R

Ron

Suddenly My MICROSOFT PAINT program won't work, Even
though it is part of WINDOWS XP, doing a "Search" will
not locate it.

My BELARC ADVISOR, My NORTON ANTI-VIRUS, My SPYBOT
SEARCH & DESTROY and My GO-BACK will not help.

I get the same old 'canned' response; "Paint has
encountered a problem and needs to close."

Whenever I click to see what data that error report
contains, I get the following;
Error Signature
AppName: mspaint.exe
AppVer: 5.1.2600.1106
ModName: mfc42u.dll
ModVer: 6.0.8665.0
Offset: 00017103
The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\default\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER8D.tmp.dir00
\appcompat.txt

How do I get My PAINT back? I have came to rely on many
of it's features when using it with My PHOTO SUITE and
other photo editing programs.

Try this, go to the control panel, Add or remove programs, on the left click
add/remove Windows components, double-click accessories and utilities, double-click
accessories, if Paint is ticked, un-tick it, okay out. Reboot and go back and re-tick
Paint, you may have to have your XP disk ready.

I have tried ALL of the above suggestions - PAINT still
will not work - Same story - same 'canned' "Report and
Send" error message.

Got to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and select Windows components.
It should be one of the icons on the left side of the Add Remove Programs
Dialog. When that window opens double click Accessories and Utilities
another dialog should open. Double Click Accessories. The next dialog
should have a checkbox for paint at the bottom of the list. If it is
checked, uncheck it and click OK on all the dialogs to uninstall it. Repeat
the process to reinstall it.

If it was unchecked just check it to install it.

A second option would be to restore you computer to an earlier date when it
was working.

Let me know if that works, Ed

Hi Ron,

If reinstalling paint (as Mary has suggested) doesn't help, this fix usually
works:

Close any/all instances of MSPaint. Then start/run regedit, navigate to this
key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

Hightlight (click on it) that key and delete it. Close the registry editor
and reopen Paint.

Hi,
had the same problem as Ron and did what you suggested by
deleting the registry file and all now works fine.
Thanks
