Paint software with sizable brushes

This is a fairly simple request. Does anybody know of any free paint
programs which have a brush tool, the same as that in Microsoft Paint but
which provides bigger brush sizes? I don't need anything fancy, I don't even
need the ability to select different colours, just big brush sizes in black
and the ability to save as bitmap, even monochrome bitmap will do. Actually,
I don't even need the ability to save because i can just do a screen dump
and then crop elsewhere. All help appreciated.

Which needs the .net environment installed, and to install that you
first need to install the MSI installer version 3 from microsoft.

This took me half an hour to install, only to find that Paintnet is
hopeless as a paint program. It is on the same level as Ultimate Paint
as the other person suggested.

Neither of these programs has any decent brushes, or even a swab you
can use to smear out things with, which is really needed because both
these programs leave bad brush marks, they show the outline of the
brush distinctly, and when you move the brush they jump and make new
outlines of the brush.

If you drag the brush over the canvas you see a bunch of brush outlines
like echoes in a row.

Both programs are useless for painting.

A much better freeware program is Pixia, which is small and quick, and
need no special environment installed, it works in anything from win98
to whatever.

Another good paint program is Artweaver, and we also have Deep Paint,
Gimpshop, and the freeware version of Paintshop Pro to choose from.

I also just tried Photofiltre as a paint program.

It is not a good paint program, it is mainly a photo processing program
and the paint features are meagre. It can be used for some quick
retouch jobs but should not be recommended as a paint program.

The airbrush tool works fairly well.

A couple of suggestions

ArtWeaver - still in development - has a corel draw feel
http://www.artweaver.de/index.php?en_version

and of course

Gimp - now up to ver. 2.2.12
This has a definite learning curve so it is not a quick fix for someone
coming from M$ Paint.
Make sure you get the GTK+2 runtime as well as the Gimp installer
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
If the pre-made brushes are not sufficient do a google search for how to
make gimp brushes.
