Paint Loses Jpeg format saving ability

I have a user that is running Windows 2000 and Office XP Small Business. She
uses Paint to save printscreens of her Peoplesoft sessions to refer to with
other employees. She can use Paint for maybe a day and then the Jpeg format
in the Save as drop down box disappears. I have fixed this countless times
by running repair of Office XP Small Business, but it keeps happening. Does
anyone have any suggestions?

Yes it happens over and over. You can save the reg entries where the filters are located and run those of course if the user has the permissions to do that..

Just save this key in regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Graphics Filters

And then when it breaks again double-click the reg file. Then shutdown MSPAINT if it is not already shut down. Then open a jpg with MSPAINT. Do not use MSPAINT to do this. Right click a jpg say then choose Open with... and choose MSPAINT there. Do that and you'll have the functionality back for a few days anyway.

Best thing though is do not use MSPAINT for your graphic needs.

Is there not a fix that will hold long term or is this something that will
have to be done forever. We have to use paint because the function that she
is doing is so small that if I get some other graphic software she will be
confused with it. Is this a windows problem or an Office problem? Do you
think that running repair with the Windows CD could help? My problem is I
need a complete fix for this without spending money on a graphic program.

thanks,

Hi Branden,

You might try using an old version of Paint Shop Pro ver. 3.1. It's just
about a single jump ahead in usability compared to Paint. This version
is at least five years old and works well with W2K.

I keep a copy available for download at http://jself.com/ftp/PSP.ZIP

No this is an issue like losing icon association. The fix for that is to rebuild the shelliconcache. This and your
problem is a Windows problem and has been a Windows problem since Windows 95. Microsoft likes to
come out with new operating systems rather than fix the issues that are common to them. It increases their
pursestrings which is understandable and it may be that even they do not know how to FIX it.

No this functionality will come and go. It's a fact of life and what I gave you is a workaround for the issue.
There is no fix.

The fix really is get a different Image application. Have you ever had her try using the Imaging that comes
with Windows? Mine has the ability to Save as jpg but again I am not sure if it is due to the graphics filters
and if it is then likely they will disappear from there too with use.
