paging file problem

I had an error that forced to boot from the XP setup CD &
do a repair setup for XP (Professional). At the same time
I installed another 128 MB or RAM to take the machine up
to 256 MB (this machine has been used for a year & a half
but this is the first time I've even seen it). Now the
machine takes 5-10 minutes to completely load Windows (it
sits on the Welcome screen for quite a while when it's
loading). That I can live with. But when I go to look at
the paging file info, I get the following error:

"Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer
because of a problem that occurred with your paging file
configuration when you started your computer. The total
paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat
larger than the size you specified."

I've tried several different things that haven't helped.
I can set the paging file to all different ranges of size
or set Windows to manage it, but it always shows the
current size as 0 MB - it isn't using the paging file.
The computer seems to run, but it hasn't been put to any
long term test.

Any thoughts? (& I get the same thing if I take out the
extra 128 MB chip that I put in)

Thanks,
MS

Hi Mike,

1. Boot into Recovery Console.

2. Because you boot into the %SystemRoot% folder (most commonly the C:\Winnt
folder), type the following command:

"cd \" (without the quotation marks)

3. Type the following command to overwrite the existing Pagefile.sys file
with Boot.ini:

"copy c:\boot.ini pagefile.sys" (without the quotation marks)

4. Type the following command:

"del pagefile.sys" (without the quotation marks)

Boot back to Windows and create a new paging file.

I went through exactly as you described & didn't have any
luck. I still have the same problem. Is there anything
special I need to know?
