Dear all,
windows2000 with several applications
I have made a "ghost" (exactly duplicate copy of my old Hdd) to the new
harddisk,
but after connecting my new hdd , it allow me log on to windows but
immediatly says paging file is too small or not available, go to performance
option and change or add the paging file - If I say OK it simply stands on
that login screen and nothing is appearing after wards. I even tried in safe
mode but no luck.
How can I login to windows to add the page file or any other way?

Pls help me

There are several methods to fix this. I read about a very simple
one only yesterday but I have never tried it. It goes like this:

1. Boot the PC with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
2. Run this command: fdisk /mbr

The command will not damage your Win2000 in any way but
it might fix your problem. Please post the result. If unsuccessful
then I'll post a method that is more involved but guaranteed to
work.

So much for that particular proposal . . . Thanks for
testing it!

The next method in terms of simplicity relies on your PC
being on a network. If it is then you can run regedit.exe on
another Win2000/XP PC, open the registry on the problem
PC, then modify this value to point the paging file to the
correct drive letter:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management

If the machine is not networked then there are other more
complicated methods.

Dear,

I can't go to it, it simply tells me to increase page file - If I press OK
it never allow me to go further. How can I edit the registry of this problem
affected pc since it is not allowing me to login.

pls advise

I wrote "run regedit.exe on an other machine", not on the
problem PC!

You can then open the problem registry by clicking
Registry / Connect Network Registry".

Dear,

I have tried this option ,I can open only HCR, HU but while clicking on HLM
it says error while opening key. I even tried one more pc and could open only
HCR and HU.

It seems there is something else wrong with your problem PC,
not just the location of the paging file.

If you are unable to open the HKLM branch then you have
to use an off-line registry editor. It's going to be a rough ride
but it works.

1. Boot the machine with a boot disk from
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
2. Accept the suggested Windows partition.
3. Accept the full path to the registry directory.
4. Type system
5. Type 9 (for Registry Editor)
6. Type ? (to see the available commands)

You now need to navigate to the key I gave you before, using
a sequence of "cd" commands and paying attention to the upper/
lower case of each key. When you're in the right place then
you can examine the current location for the paging file, and
modify it.

Good luck!

Dear Pegasus,
Sorry, I could not back on yesterday because of my browser problem.
I have made the diskette and boot from the floppy and did as you typed in
the response - it says the paging file path is c:\pagefile.sys 1000 1500. But
my doubt is the paging file available in the c: drive or it may moved to
other drive? How can I find the paging file? or what to modify there in the
registry value c:\pagefile.sys ?

pls advise

It does not matter where the paging file is right now - Windows
will create a new one if it cannot find the old one.

If the paging file entry still points at drive C: then your problem
might be caused by a changed system drive letter. This happens
sometimes with imaged system, and it's bad news. You must
reverse the change. I would now do this:

1. Launch Win2000.
2. Start a session on a networked PC under the same admin account
& password as the one on the problem PC.
3. Run this command on the networked PC: psexec \\YourBadPC cmd
Psexec.exe is freely available from www.sysinternals.com.
4. Run this command: set systemroot.
It's supposed to return "c:\winnt". If it is a different drive letter,
go to Step 5.
5. If you can reach the HKLM branch of the registry while
running regedit on the networked PC, great. If you cannot then
use the Nordahl boot disk as before.
6. Navigate to HKLM/SYSTEM/MountedDevices
7. Check which entry looks like "\DosDevice\DRIVE_LETTER:"
where Drive_Letter is the drive letter you identified in Step 3.
8. Change the drive letter back to C:.
9. Check all other \DosDevice entries. If one of them already
uses C:, then change it to an unused letter, e.g. L:, M: or N:.

If your system used to reside on drive C: then this should restore
your installation.
