Paging File - Can't customize (XP Home, SP2)

Dean Heller

Any other suggestions? Am seriously considering removing SP2 and hoping
problems go away with it.

Thanks,
Dean

You must be using Xp home, then.

Apparently the link above does not work anymore, so you will need to go in
to Safe Mode as the Administrator to see the security tab

If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the
computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has
Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.

-- but since you could not have easily changed this, it is very unlikely
that is your problem anyway, now

First, thanks for your patience!

In explorer, I have NO option that I can check, or
uncheck, under "tools, folder options, view" that refers
to "use simple file sharing".

Again:

In Windows Explorer, right click on drive (c:),
Properties
Look at Security tab (if it's not there, go to Tools,
Folder Options, View
& turn off last setting [use simple file sharing])
Is system (account) listed as having full-control?

----------

If the previous instructions gave SYSTEM complete control,
which were followed exactly, then yes. Otherwise, tell me
what I have to do to give the system complete control and
I will gladly give it a go. Thanks.

and does SYSTEM account have full control?

OK, followed exactly, step by step, this time. Restarted
and no paging error. Hung up at logon screen. Ctrl- alt-
del
got me to desktop. Logoff, wait 5 min, logon. Paging
file
error, again.

The instructions were not to disable all of autoprotect,
just ONE of its
settings
1. Start Norton AntiVirus (NAV).
2. Click on Options.
3. Double click on Auto-Protect under System.
4. Click on Advanced.
5. Under 'How to increase Windows start up
protection'
uncheck 'Load
Auto-Protect during system boot'.
6. Click on OK.
7. Restart the computer and check whether the issue
persists.

Yes, I did disable autoprotect. Don't know what you
mean
by "SYSTEM have "Full Control of the drive". Happy to
try
anything and eager to learn more. So......

Thanks!

You didn't just completely disable Autoprotect, did
you?

I have NAV 2005. I disabled autoprotect. Rebooted and
got
no paging file error. However, locked up on logon
screen.
Ctrl-alt-del got to desktop. Logged off, came back
in
and
got the paging error again. Enabled autoprotect and
back
to where I was. Any more ideas?

Thanks!

Are you by any chance running NAV 2004 with
Autoprotect
on during system
boot? If so, besides losing control of pagefile
size
&
location, your
pagefile is probably ALSO being recreated (& moved)
on
each reboot

To disable the Auto-Protect advanced option, perform
the
steps provided
below:

1. Start Norton AntiVirus (NAV).
2. Click on Options.
3. Double click on Auto-Protect under System.
4. Click on Advanced.
5. Under 'How to increase Windows start up
protection'
uncheck 'Load
Auto-Protect during system boot'.
6. Click on OK.
7. Restart the computer and check whether the issue
persists.

To check whether your Norton AntiVirus is working
properly, you can perform
an EICAR test. Refer to the link provided below to
perform an EICAR test:

Norton
AntiVirus'

All right, listen to this one. So I set the paging
file
size to what I want, bigger than the suggested 382
megs.
So what does it do? After I restart the computer,
it
resets the paged file size to 382 megs, despite it
clearly showing that the settings are set
on "Custom
size" and having the size much larger than 382
megs.
What's the deal with that???

Oh, and when I go onto the Administrator account,
which
Microsoft has so wonderfully hidden from any sort
of
convenient grasp, the paging file magically sets
itself
to the custom size that I want! But as soon as I
go
back
to our main account, not in safe mode (and yes,
our
main
account is set to Computer Administrator), the
paging
file size gets thrown back to 382 megs, with the
settings
still saying "Custom size".

Can anybody help me with this one?
