Paging Error

I have been having a CD-ROM issue with Windows XP
SP2. I have a basic vanilla Lite-On CD-ROM player (not burner) running
as a slave to a Plextor PX-708A DVD Burner. It used to be I got
intermittent reading of the CD-ROM player but now I get no response
from the CD-ROM whatsoever. It whirs and loads but usually the system
freezes soon after. I have icons for both the CD and the DVD and I can
read data and programs just fine from the DVD burner. Both load in
Windows Explorer and both icons are there.

Looking at Event Viewer, before I try and use the CD, I get Event 51:

IO_WARNING_PAGING_FAILURE
Message: An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation.

Explanation
An input/output (I/O) request to a memory-mapped file failed and the
operation was retried.

Trying to access it, I get Event 11, a bad cable. I've replaced cables
and drives to no avail.

Can someone explain what the paging failure on device %1 means? Tthis
problem is driving me nuts. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you,

The first thing you need to do is to make certain that this is not a
hardware problem with the drive.

Disconnect the DVD burner drive completely and try the computer with
just the Lite-On CDROM drive. Also try uninstalling the Lite-On
drive entry in Device Manager and then rebooting the system and see if
it is detected.

Finally, boot the computer with a Windows 98 StartUp disk that
includes CDROM drivers (www.bootdisk.com) and see if you can read the
directory of a CD in the drive.

Good luck
