Pages with titles

Have you ever read a book where, at the top of the page, they say the name
of the book, then on the next page they say the name of the author or say the
name of the chapter? How do I do this? Rather than just the name of the book,
I'm asking how to put the name of the chapter or the author as well.

You don't mention what version of Word you're using, so I'll assume it's
Office 2003 (since that's what I'm using).

Open Page Setup - Layout (you can do it from the File menu or from the
Header and Footer toolbar) and set it to "Different odd and even." Then
create a header with the book's title on the odd pages and the author's name
on the even ones (or vice versa). You can set the page numbers to be on the
right margin on the even pages and on the left margin for the odd pages if
you'd like.

I hope this helps.

First, go to File > Page Setup > Layout and check the box for "Different odd
and even". If you want no header to appear on the first page of the chapter,
also check "Different first page". That gives you three different headers
(also three different footers): first page, odd page, and even page. [To see
the even page header, you have to make at least two pages. If you have both
boxes checked, you need at least three pages to see all three headers.]

In the File > Properties dialog, make sure the author's name is correct in
the Author box.

Put the chapter title on the first page, and format it in a style that you
won't use for anything else. You can use the built-in Heading 1 style (which
makes it easy to include it in a table of contents).

Leave the First Page Header blank.

In the Even Page Header, use the Insert > Field dialog to insert an {Author}
field. This will repeat whatever is in the Author box of the Properties
dialog.

In the Odd Page Header, use the Insert > Field dialog to insert a {StyleRef
"Heading 1"} field. This will repeat the text of the most recent paragraph
having the Heading 1 style -- that is, the chapter title.

When you start the next chapter, insert a Next Page Section Break. That will
give you a first page with a blank header. Type this chapter's title and
format it in Heading 1 style. The even page headers will show the new
chapter title automatically.

Sorry, that should say the _odd_ page headers will show the new chapter
title -- since that's where the StyleRef field is.
