Help states:

Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefileComputer Configuration\Windows
Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

When this policy is enabled, it causes the system pagefile to be cleared
upon clean shutdown. If you enable this security option, the hibernation
file (hiberfil.sys) is also zeroed out when hibernation is disabled on a
portable computer system.

Default: Disabled.

I guess enabled is better. I have a PC, not a portable.

I do not know how to change this. Help did not tell me how.

Thanks.

Go to Start-Run and type in gpedit.msc [return] and then navigate to
Computer Configuration-Windows
Settings-Security Settings-Local Policies-Security Options
(As long as you have XP Pro that is - gpedit.msc doesn't exist in Home
Edition...)

If hiberfil.sys is deleted, it will be created again on the next
hibernation. If Hibernation is turned off, hiberfil.sys will not be
recreated. If hibernation is enabled, you cannot delete hiberfil.sys.
I guess enabled is better.

No, it is not.

If ClearPageFileAtShutdown is set to 1 (Enabled), shutdown takes a *long*
time.

Check this registry key...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management
Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: Set to 0
0 = No, do not clear it
1 = Yes, clear it

Thanks. Is enabled better for the operation of the computer? Maybe there is
junk on the pagefile slowing things down.

For ClearPageFileatShutdown?

More secure? Yes.
Better? No.

Enable it and shutdown, see how long it takes to shutdown. If it doesn't
bother you, keep it that way. If it does, change it. It's all up to you.

No, there is nothing in the pagefile slowing things down and enabling
ClearPageFileAtShutdown does absolutely nothing to the performance of
the computer. This option is only for highly secure environments where
someone could hack into the computer and by examining the pagefile they
could find files that were held in the Virtual Memory when Windows was
being used, files are moved in and out of the pagefile as needed.
Unless you work for the CIA of MI5 and your files are of importance to
the national security of your country who on earth would want to go
through the trouble of analyzing your pagefile only to find out that it
contains nothing but trivial bits of innocent files? The only thing
that enabling this will do is increase the shutdown time of your
computer, as the rather large pagefile will have to be purged at shutdown.
