pagefile.sys

R

Rick Goebel

This morning I got a message on my Domain Controller
stating that they system was low on virtual memory and
was increasing the size of the paging file. I looked at
the Virtual Memory setting in System Properties and found
drive c: with min 200 max 200 and drive d: with min 400
max 1200. Total paging file info is minimum allowed 2MB,
recommended 766 MB and currently allocated 741 MB. I'm
sure that I had drive c: set for more than 200 before
this event. I went to explore the drives and I couldn't
locate an actual pagefile.sys on either drive but the
server seems to running ok.

Is this a problem?

What can I do to fix it if it needs fixing?

Rick,
Your total aggregate page file size across all drives should be a minimum
size of 1.5 times the amount of installed RAM (or greater than or equal to
the minimum recommended size) and maximum should be set to twice the
minimum.

"Show hidden files and folders" is (and was) checked and
there is no sign of the file.

Rick,
It is a hidden file, from Windows Explorer, you would need to go "Tools",
"Folder Options", "View" and check "Show hidden files and folders" and
search the root of the drive for pagefile.sys.

I have done this and rebooted but I still can't see
pagefile.sys on either my c: or d: drives.

Rick, you will also need to uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file
types" and possibly uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

Dave,

After you get through recreating the pagefile.sys, are you left with
NTAUTHORITY having full control and could someone do this deliberately, I
mean a grimlin. What I'm trying to ask, can worms crawl through that crack?
I have become a consumate expert on recreating an da*n pagefile.sys, withou
knowing if NTAUTHORITY has iherited a crown, or he be demoted back to
something like a knight (power user), huh.Sir?

thanks, as always,
don

Bob is exactly right. You also can use the ControlPanel\Folder Options, just
so you would know. In this cas it doesn't make any difference, but sometimes
it does. The applets sometime need to go through teh Control Panel, instead
of say, looking in the properties files.

The system account (nt authority) is included within the "Everyone" group.
This is what usually causes the problem...... when a user is trying to
secure the pc by removing the "Everyone" account permissions from the drive.
The system account (nt authority) is a local account for the operating
system to use and never has any privileges/permissions to access another pc.
