My pagefile/virtual memory has been reporting incorrectly and I can't seem to
fix this or if it's even a problem.
My system is running Windows XP Professional, SP1 + all current Windows
Updates. I cannot update to SP2 due to some other issues I'm working out,
but this is just one thing I've found that seems unusual.
My system consists of three disks, one partition each, NTFS for all
partitions, UW160 + 29160 Controller:
Drive C: 17GB (Basic)
Drive D: 34GB (Dynamic)
Drive E: 34GB (Dynamic)
While System Properties (My Computer, Properties, Advanced,
Performance/Settings, Advanced), reports the correct pagefile size,
everything else on the system reports substantially more than is allocated.
Main Memory size is 1024MB (1 GB) and no matter what size I make the
pagefile, nor what disk I put it on, system diagnostic programs always report
it wrong.
Example, if I set the pagefile to C:, and 512/512.
The pagefile.sys on the C: drive shows up as 524,288 bytes. And Advanced
system properties shows "Total paging file size of all drives: 512MB"
BUT, DxDiag shows:
Page File: 142MB used, 1295MB available
AND MSInfo shows:
Total Virtual Memory: 2.40GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.86GB
Page File Space: 1.40GB
Page File: C:\Pagefile.sys
If I SET the pagefile off of drive C:, and create a 1536/1536 Pagefile on
Drive E:, again the same behavior is noted. DxDiag and MSInfo will report
the pagefile substantially larger than the actual file and how much is
allocated.
Is there a "fix" to this? Is there a patch or other thing or is this a
known issue? Any direction would be appreciated.
