I get the above message on a blue screen every time I insert a CD. It doesn't
matter what kind of CD (mixed data, application, disk of .jpg's).

If the CD is in the computer after reboot, I can use it fine. I can eject
and reinsert it fine. If I insert another CD it fails.

Autorun is set to do nothing on all disks.

I would begin by re-installing, or updating, the drivers for your CD drive.

Go to Start > Run and type,
devmgmt.msc
Click OK

Do you have Easy CD Creator installed? Version 5.0 is not compatible
with Windows XP and you need to upgrade to at least version 5.1.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the device, there is no driver to roll back
to and I can't find a new one to upgrade to. It just uses the standard
Microsoft cdrom.sys drivers.

I don't have ANY burning software installed.

Okay. Always try the easiest fix first. Now we will have to delve a
bit deeper.

Can you provide the complete *verbatim* text of the STOP error
message, including the STOP code, all 4 parameters, and anything else
that may follow the parameters, especially anything that might refer
to a file or to a program function?

The error is basically a memory management failure - a non-existent
memory page was called for. This can be caused by a number of
different problems, such as:
- defective RAM
- a software error in an application program or device driver
- a hardware defect.

Is it possible for you to try a different CDROM drive in the computer,
even temporarily? That would at least confirm or eliminate the drive
itself as a suspect.

I would also suggest going into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event
Viewer and taking a look at both the Application and System listings in the
left panel. Tapping on those will reveal "events" in the right pane where
you can look for error messages denoted by either a yellow triangle with an
exclamation point (advisory) or a red circle with a white X (warning, real
issue). Those can be right-clicked with a selection of Properties to see a
portion of the problem. It may lead you to a specific driver or hardware
which is causing the issue.

I would also suggest going into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event
Viewer.
