Page width issue that throws a blank page

In a portrait layout report I have squeezed in the text boxes, adjusted the
margins, etc. but the problem of page width being exceeded doesn't go away
and an extra page is thrown as a result. From what I can tell the page width
has not been exceeded.
Q1. Is this happening because the field width setting in tables (no of
bytes) from which the data in text controls in the report are drawn add to
more than the page width for the font size setting? Say, Name = 50, address1
= 50, etc. etc. added up at font size 8 points added up exceed the 8.25"
width?

Q2. What is and how can I solve this problem?

No. The report layout has no connection to the width of the table fields.

It sounds like you understand that the Width of the report (Properties box)
plus the Left margin plus the Right margin (File | Page Setup) must be less
than the paper width.

If it is not to do with the width, could it be to do with the height of the
sections? For example, if you have an unnecessarily tall Report Footer
section, it might spill over onto another page.

I would suggest temporarily making each section's background color a different
non-white color. If the problem is width you will see small pieces of all
colors on the left edge of the blank pages. If the problem is height you should
see one or more bands of color extending across the blank pages.
