There is a dash beneath the blinking cursor when I open a new page on Word. Should it be there or if not, how can I remove it?

Yes, it should be there. It indicates the end of the document in Normal
view. If you switch to Page Layout view (on the View menu, or using the
buttons in the lower left corner) you won't see it.
