Page Numbering

I'm typing a document in Word 2000.

I'm using a company template, which has a footer containing a table and
then some copyright text. Basically, it looks like this:

Issue Document Authorisation Page Last Updated
v0.2 John Doe 15 of 18 17/08/2006 10:14
© <standard company copyright statement>

This footer appears on all pages, including the first page of the
document which is the title page. What I want to know is this, can I
do the following and if so how:

Remove the footer from the first page
Have it starting on the second page
The second page will show page number 1 in the footer
The number of pages should show the total number of pages in
the document, MINUS 1 page. So, in the above example, the page
numbering would show 15 of 17, as there are only 17 pages
of actual document text...starting with the contents page.

Hope I've explained it OK!

Anyone help?

Hi Duncs

Certainly (except that you're not adhering to your company template
anymore, then ... :)): File | Page Setup, Layout tab: Different First
Page will offer you different headers/footers on the first page of your
document.

Have it starting on the second page
The second page will show page number 1 in the footer
The number of pages should show the total number of pages in
the document, MINUS 1 page. So, in the above example, the page
numbering would show 15 of 17, as there are only 17 pages
of actual document text...starting with the contents page.

setup your numbering (there's a "Format Page Number" button in the H&F
toolbar) to start with "0" (zero), don't show a page number on the first
page. Put the following in the footer on the second page:

{ PAGE } OF {={ NUMPAGES }-1 }

Robert,

Many thanks for the reply.

I've tried your suggestion for the number of pages, but I either get it
displaying the full text "{={ NUMPAGES }-1 }", or it displays the
following "!Syntax Error, {".

What am I doing wrong?

You must use CTRL+F9 to create the field boundaries {}

Graham,

Here's what I've been doing:

Press CTRL+F9
Insert the "=" sign
Press CTRL+F9
Insert "NUMPAGES"
Press Right Cursor twice
Insert "-1"

When I then hide the code fields, nothing is displayed in the document.

I've even tried the following, and still nothing is displayed:

Press CTRL+F9
Insert the "=" sign
From the Field menu item on the Insert menu, insert the "NUMPAGES"
field
Insert "-1"

What am I doing wrong now?

What happens if you switch to Print Preview and back? Does that update
the fields correctly?

Stefan,

I'm already in Print Preview, but when I switched to Web Layout it
appeared. Then, when I switched back to Print Preview, it waas still
there.

Problem solved...but still a bit weird that it didn't appear in the
first place.

Actually, it's not so weird, since fields are semi-automatic; their
updates need to be triggered by something. See:

Which fields are updated when you open, repaginate, or print document
