page numbering: word 2003

I am writing a large word document using office 2003.
My question is: I am inserting reference pages that relate to the same
document. I am wondering if it is possible to edit page numbers with letters?
(e.x. 1,2,3,3a,3b,4,4a)

I appreciate any assistance.

Neither is it possible, nor desirable to use such a numbering system. If
the page numbers to not follow a fixed sequence how do you know that you
have all of the pages?
