Page numbering problems - every page is page zero!

Hi everyone,
I'm maintaining a document using Word 2002 (SP-2). The document would have been created in an earlier of Word, probably Word 2000.

The first page of the document is a title page, with no header or footer displayed. It contans a 'next page' section break, so the next page of the document is the start of section 2. Section 2 is where the headers and footers start.

The footer contains a page number field (set to start from 1) and a Num Pages field (ie total number of pages in the document). It's in the form 'Page x of y'. All sounds pretty standard so far, right?

Unfortunately this is where my problem begins. The page number field (field 'x') is zero throughout the document. As a result, all listings in the TOC also refer to page zero, although the hyperlinks to each page work correctly.

I have checked the field codes for the page number field using shift-F9 ... all looks OK.
Replaced the field codes via Insert > Field ... no change.
Checked and reset Format Page Number ... no change.

Now here's something really strange. If I select the page number field and then click away from it, it shows the correct page number - just briefly. The field then refreshes and reverts back to page zero.

I don't think the issue is a 'display' problem (eg low memory) as I'm using a very new laptop/notebook and am not experiencing any performance problems in Word or in any other applications.

I'm starting to think I may need to copy the content of this doc into a new document and let Word redo the page numbering from scratch.

I'm actually a very experienced Word user but this one has me stumped!! Any advice, thoughts, ideas, etc that might provide a way out would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dayo, you're a star !!! Thanks for your help, that was exactly what I needed. The headers contained tables and pictures ... once I removed these objects, everything started working properly

Thanks again
Tim
