Page Numbering after section break

I have a 3 page document (a cover letter which doesn't need page numbers).
But I want to include a section break at the end of the cover letter and
then add some sample pages of a novel. These pages will need to be numbered.
How do I do that?

For this specific situation you don't need a section break. Just use the
"Different first page" setting (Layout tab of Page Setup), omit the
numbering from the First Page Header/Footer, and set the numbering to start
from 0.

If the cover letter exceeds one page, then you're back to a section break,
and you have to unlink the sections and restart numbering.

In the relevant header/footer, click the Same as Previous (or Link to
Previous) button on the Header and Footer toolbar to turn it off. For more,
