I’ve seen this problem now several times on my computer, and now it’s back.
I can dial up to my ISP fine, but when I attempt to browse the Internet, I
keep getting “page cannot be displayed,†even though I have an IP address, a
valid DNS address, and no proxy set. In addition, I cannot open Remote
Desktop sessions - I get “cannot open socket†error. PCAnywhere won’t work
due to a similar message. I also noticed that IPSEC service won’t start up
after a reboot, and cannot be started manually, and that the Task Scheduler
also fails after startup, and cannot be started manually. I get ping replies
from my ISP’s router and DNS servers, but I get “unknown host†messages when
I try to ping web addresses like google.com.
Environment:
Pentium 1.7Ghz
256MB RAM
WinXPHome
IE SP6 SP1
SP1 with all critical patches up to 8/2004 – have not installed SP2 yet
AT&T Worldnet dialup client
AT&T Worldnet Dialup Accelerator
McAfee Antivirus (purchased 11/04, I forget the version)
McAfee Personal Firewall (purchased 11/04, I forget the version)
McAfee Internet Security (purchased 11/04, I forget the version)
Internet Connection Sharing is NOT turned on
Internet Connection Firewall is NOT turned on
No Pop-up Blockers, Internet Toolbars, or Internet Companions installed
The first time I had this problem was right after I attempted to install my
company’s VPN software (Checkpoint SecureClient Next Generation), and I was
down for several days before I finally got the bright idea of attempting a
system restore, which worked. I didn’t attempt to install the VPN software
again.
The second time I had this problem was right after I attempted to install a
Netgear Wireless WG311 NIC. No matter whether I tried to install the entire
Wireless NIC suite of software, or tried to install just the driver itself, I
would get this problem after the reboot following the NIC install. I kept
undoing the problem by using System Restore. I’ve reinstalled the NIC about
six times now, trying slightly different methods each time, always making
sure to turn off the McAfee services before installing. I've also gotten the
latest driver from Netgear's website.
I’ve now uninstalled all the McAfee products, uninstalled the AT&T Worldnet
dialup accelerator, reinstalled the AT&T Client software, and re-applied
every XP SP1 hotfix that I had, and I still can’t get anywhere.
I’ve tried logging off and logging on as a different user, and no luck.
Both were administrators of the machine. (One account I use all the time,
the other account I only use for troubleshooting.)
I’ve tried resetting all Internet Explorer settings . . . “reset to
defaults†as well as Security = Low. I’ve tried deleting all temporary
internet files & cookies.
Any help?

PS: I can guarantee that spyware is NOT the culprit. I deal with that
!@#$% every day at work, and know darned well how to stay away from it.
