Blank DVDs being recognized as "blank CD."

Hi there,
I am hoping that someone out there is smarter than I ever thought I was! I
have a laptop with WinXP Pro SP2 (32bit) and 2 DVD Burners installed, 1
internal (HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GWA4040N SCSI) and 1 External (DVDRW DRW-6S160H
USB, this is Dual Layer, Light Scribe, etc.).

I just formatted my computer and reinstalled all of the software, and I’ve
got a small problem now. With both drives if I insert ANY blank DVD media
(+/-/R/RW/DL etc) it will only recognize it as a “Blank CD†and my icon in
Explorer changes from “DVD-RW Drive†to “CD Drive.†And if I try to open it,
I get “E:\ is not accessible Invalid Function.â€

I had this same problem last time I had to do this, and for the life of me I
can’t remember how I fixed it, and no, I didn’t write it down! I’ve searched
Microsoft’s boards, and tried every KnowledgeBase article I could find, none
of them work. It seems that MS thinks this error only occurs if Roxio is
involved, which it is not, and never has been on this system.

I’ve also searched Internet message boards hoping to find the same answer I
found last time, but I can’t seem to find it. I’ve deleted the drives and
reinstalled them, deleted the upper and lower filters, updated ASPI to both
Nero and Adaptec’s versions, I have all of the updates that Microsoft’s
update site tells me I need, changed from DMA to PIO and back… Etc. Etc. Etc.

Finally, not withstanding the fact that they were both working just prior to
the format, and that this same thing happened last time I formatted… I know
the drives are still good because I can (and have) put them both in my
mother’s XP Home Edition laptop and they work perfectly.

The one thing I have found is that if I regedit and disable IMAPI on the
drives, it gets rid of the error message, but the “Blank CD†is still staring
me in the face, and I still can’t burn any DVDs (with Nero 7.)

Please, is there something I’ve overlooked?
Thanks in advance,
~Luke

The burning software built-in to XP was written by Roxio.
So you do have Roxio software on your system.
Have you installed the drive manufacturers driver for the drive?

Of course it's made by Roxio... LOL... What was I thinking... As for the
drivers, I went to both Manufacturer's web sites (LG and "CompUSA Brand") and
all I could find is "WinXP Comes with drivers, you won't need new drivers."

I've even searched for some after market drivers that someone managed to
come up with. No go. Latest firmware update was already done on the 4040N,
and I can find no upgrades or updates for the external...

Do you actually have packet writing software installed, like InCD, DirectCD,
Sonic DLA? This kind of software doesn't come with Windows and if you
haven't installed the burner software, you probably won't have it. And
that might well give the symptom you're seeing.

I've got the Nero 7 Suite installed, which includes InCD. I've pretty much
always just used Nero Burning ROM though, to actually do my burning. My
system is set up (software package wise) exactly as it was before the format.

THanks

Hey Guys...

Is there a way to make this information readily available on MS's site? As I
could find this "resolution" or even "workaround," whatever you want to call
it, anywhere.

Thanks for trying to help… My hell, after 5 days I finally stumbled over the
solution on my own… Through an act of desperation, it is fixed!

My version of XP Pro came with drivers v. 5.1.2600.1106 and WinUpdate
updated them to 5.1.2600.2180…. Neither of which worked right.

I found Oak Technologies drivers (version 5.1.2535.0) on the internet, and
installed them, still having the issues I discussed below. I got suggestions
to downgrade Nero to 6.6, no Joy… Etc. Etc. Etc.

EVERYTHING I tried failed, every suggestion from every message board failed.
Everything in MS’s TechNet and DevNet failed.

So, today, out of frustration, I pulled my Drive out of the computer, and
disconnected my external. Rebooted the computer.

First I copied the .2535 drivers into the System32 folder and the
System32\Drivers and \dllcache folders. Replacing the standard Windows
drivers that were back in there.

Went into Regedit and deleted every Key that related to either of my drives
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
Which included:
_ControlSet001_Enum_IDE and _USBSTOR, _ControlSet002(Same subs),
_ControlSet004(Same subs) as well as _CurrentControlSet(Same subs)

I rebooted the computer again (Still with no drives.) Checked that
EVERYTHING was still gone from Regedit, and that the drivers were still
version ..2535.

Rebooted again, this time with the drives reattached…

And VOILA! It frigging worked! This time, I am writing down the solution… LOL

Thanks again for everything.
