New windows XP Home OEM install problems

I have installed windows XP Home OEM (Dell) SP 1a, not SP 2.

I have just done a format install and now I have two problems. First I can’t
get internet access. I’ve gone through and set-up my connection many times
exactly the way I did when I first started with my current ISP, I’ve also
checked my ISP web site to make sure and I can’t get it to work. I know that
there is nothing wrong with my ISP, my Modem/Router or my Network card as I
have no problems browsing the web and using Teamspeak with a Linux Live disc,
so it must be windows.

Once I set-up a broadband connection I attempt to connect to my ISP and I
get the message - cannot connect to my ISP. As well there is no Network icon
in the menu tray next to the clock which there was before the install.

The other problem is when I go to shut down I would always get three options
– Stand-by, Restart, and Shut-down. The Stand-by (yellow) button is there but
very dim and can’t be used, why is that?

Did you install the hardware drivers?
Windows XP cannot communicate with your hardware uynless you install the
drivers for it to do so.
