page break and page number insert does not work in word document

I am writing an essay and when I click on page break to start a new page
nothing happens, also page number insert link doesn't work at all. Could
anyone help with this? It's worked for me before so I don't understand why
it's not working now.

You need to explain this a little further --

Does 'click on page break' mean select Break on the Insert menu?
What does 'page number insert link' mean?
