Packet writing

Is it possible to determine if a CD (or DVD) has had data written to it
(by someone else) using packet writing (drag and drop) software ?
 
Thanks. The reason for asking is that I am having trouble viewing some
jpg files on a CD with my stand-alone DVD player. I thought the DVD
owner might have used a packet writer to produce the CD.
