Package presentation to CD

I am trying to package a presentation to a CD-RW, although the E drive
registers that a cd is in the drive, it will not copy the files across. It
is very important that the cd's (or any form of data storage device) i
distribute are re-writable as this will save a lot of time when additional
information is created.
Can anyone help me please?

In Package for CD, choose the option to save to a folder, rather than
directly to the CD. Then use your regular CD burning software to copy the
contents of that folder to the CD. PowerPoint just isn't very smart about
burning CDs, so it is best to use your regular CD burning software to do
that part.

Hi David,
I just tried it and copied the files to a 'my documents', this may seem like
a stupid question, but from there, how do i get the files onto cd, and will
they still paly automatically and in the right order?

If you checked the Package for Folder option, you should have created a
folder within My Documents. You want to get all the files from that
folder to your CD. I can't really help you with this because it depends
on the specifics of your CD Writing software. You can try selecting all
the files in that folder (open the folder, go to the Edit menu, and
choose Select All), copying them (Edit menu > Copy), opening the CD drive
in My Computer, and pasting (Edit menu > Paste), and then clicking on the
button that says Write these files to CD.

But if you use other CD writing software, that might be better.

What do you mean by "automatically"? Do you want the CD to autorun, that
is run the PowerPoint as soon as the CD is put in the CD player. In that
case, follow the instructions here:

Thank you so much for that David, you have helped me no end, but not
intentionally! I have created this presentation and after doing it realised
that viewer does not support screen tips and a hyperlink warning always
appears when entering a new document (of which there are hundreds so as you
can imagine this is a nightmare!). By copying to folder rather than cd i can
have the presentation without any such hitches, except one...is there any way
i can play the cd automatically for a folder, i jsut cant seem to work it out!
Thank you for all you help so far!

I don't understand. How does copying to a folder make the presentation run
with screen tips and without hyperlink warnings?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by playing the cd automatically for the
folder -- do you mean you want to put a folder on the CD and put all the
files inside that? Even if you do that, it won't resolve the problems with
screen tips -- that's a limitation of the PPT Viewer. And hyperlink warnings
should occur whether you're using the Viewer or the full PowerPoint program
itself.

Like you i have no idea how this has happended! all i did was 'copy to
folder' (the presentation) which was sent to my documents. I then copied
that onto a CD-RW and there are no hyperlink warnings on the CD and the
screen tips are fine! mystery! a good one though!
I then saved the presentation as a .pps file and want that single file to
play automatically when the cd is loaded. is this possible?

If you just packaged to My Documents, you probably didn't realize that the
Package to Folder also gives you a bunch of PPT Viewer files to include on
the CD.

And so, if you just burned the resulting presentation to the CD, when you
open that presentation, it's running from PPT, not from the PPT Viewer. And
that's why the screen tips are fine. (I'm still not sure about the
hyperlinks, though.)

Or perhaps you didn't have the options to include the Viewer selected when
you packaged?

What you should do is create a folder in My Documents or even directly on
your C drive. Name it, oh, Test. Then package your PPT file to the Test
folder. (This isn't mandatory, because PPT will create a folder based on
what you typed in in the "CD name" box in the Package for CD dialog. But
just to make sure you're looking at the right stuff, packaging to a specific
Test folder would be a good idea.) Make sure you hit the Options button in
the Package for CD dialog box and specify to include the Viewer and linked
files. You might want to specify to embed the fonts there also.

After you package to the test folder, you should see your presentation, any
linked files (sounds, PDFs, whatever), PPTView.EXE, a bunch of DLL files, a
play.BAT file, an autorun.INF file, and some other miscellaneous stuff. Burn
all those files to the CD. Don't put them in a folder, just burn them
"loose" on the CD. That will create a CD that autoruns like you want.
