P4C800-E DLX won't start

My neighbor has a computer that has run flawlessly for over
a year and now it won't start. The motherboard LED is lighted
so I know it is getting power. If you press the On/Off button
the fans spin for an instant and then stop. If you press it again
it does nothing. If you unplug the power and let the LED go out
and plug the system back in it does the same thing - fans spin
for an instant and then stop.

The system is as follows:

ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
3.0 Ghz Intel Prescott
1.0 Gb Dual Channel Kingston RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
2 X Seagate SATA on Promise RAID 1
PC Power and Cooling 400W Silencer ATX

Thanks,
Philip

Philip;

Plug powered speakers into the sound output jack and listen to the POST
reporter.

It sounds like you have a fault in the power supply unit or the motherboard;
most likely the power supply unit. Try replacing the PSU with a known
working one for the easiest diagnosis.

Philip,

My P4P800 had the same issue around 4-5 months ago. Took a gamble and
swapped out the power supply, haven't looked back since.

In this case I went against my gut feeling - I felt seeing as thought the
motherboard LED remains 'on' at all times, it can't be the PSU.. that, and
the fact I had to unplug and replug the PSU into mains power.

Still.. hope this helps.

Jas.

I am going to try a new power supply today.
I guess even a PC Power & Cooling unit can go bad!
Thanks to all who responded.
