underground 2 problem with P4C800-E DLX

George Molnar

hi!

I've got a little problem with the underground 2. It's freeze for 4-5
seconds when I came out from a shop or I start a race. I try to change the
videocard, the memory, the windows, but it doesn't work. I've got an ASUS
P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard, and I think, this is the bad hardware.

My config:
ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe (default BIOS)
Intel P4 2,8GHz NW
512MB Samsung RAM 400MHz
HIS Exalibur 9800Pro 128MB 256bit
120GB Seagate Barracuda SATA
Creative SoundBlaster PCI 128

if somebody know the answer, please send me an email! thank you!

Are you sure there is not a patch for the game to fix this? Does your
computer do this any other time?

I had a computer once with a problem like this, and it turned out that
AGP DMA/Dime wasn't enabled. Games were smoother after installing a
different version of chipset drivers and video card drivers. The
options menu item of the Powerstrip program, can tell you something
about the correctness of the drivers installed. As can DXDIAG from
the DirectX install.

Another possibility, is that the program is running low on system
memory. Do you observe swapping to disk, during the 5 second delay ?

No, the HDD doesn't work until the game freeze. I try to patch the game, but
it doesn't work. Where can I found the AGP DMA/Dime in the BIOS? I can't
found... I can't download the PowerStrip, the download didn't start...

I don't see a problem there either. There are three options listed
in Powerstrip - they are DMA, Dime, or None. Dime stands for
Direct In Memory Execute, and that is an alternative to DMA
(Direct Memory Access). As long as one or the other is
enabled, that is the best you can do.

So that leaves either the game itself, a driver problem, or
something related to the amount of memory being used.

I don't know anything about this game, but I understand it
uses the network, if you race against someone. Would it be
checking your computer to see if there is a dialup or
highspeed network connection ? That is the problem with
trying to diagnose something long distance - it is so
hard to see stuff :)

Have you tried posting in alt.games.need-for-speed ?
There could be a lot more people with the same problem
there. They'll be able to tell you whether those
delays are normal or not.

Hi!
I sent them (alt.games.need-for-speed) my problem but they didn't answer. I
play it single player mode, so the network speed can't be the problem. If I
update the XP with SP2 and the latest ATI driver, it can be get better?
Thank for your answer:

I downloaded the NFSU2 demo, and it worked smoothly for me.
I was only trying it at 640x480 resolution.

Does the real game require the CD to be present in the drive ?
Maybe it is doing a CD check when you start a race ?

I don't have NFSU 2 yet, but I encountered a similar freeze problem
with NFSU when I used a no-cd hacked exe. It turned out the no-cd
hack was butchered and could not get through the to the game menu. It
just froze as soon as you pressed the multiplayer menu button. I
ended up finding a better no-cd patch.

hi!
I don't use no-cd patch, so it can't be the problem!
