P4C800-E Dlx and SP-2?

Just curious if anyone knows of any issues with SP-2 and the P4C800-E
Deluxe -- did a search of the MS Knowledgebase regarding this motherboard as
well as the i875P chipset and did not turn up anything, which does not mean
that problems don't exist--I just don't trust Microsoft. I am using the 1016
BIOS and my system is very stable. As with most upgrades, I am itchy to do
it, but am holding off for fear that some weird, esoteric little bug in SP-2
might screw up my RAID, IDE, SATA or other items that are working right.

I installed SP-2 on my PC4800E-Dlx (3.0 Northwood, 1024 mb memory, Intel
RAID array, Promise IDE in use) without any difficulty whatever. System is
as fast and stable as it had been. I'm also overclocking 5%.

It is possible to use CPUz (Google it for a free download) or several other
utilities that will give the details of your system or you could use the
AsusUpdate utility and in it is a selection to identify the current BIOS. I
am not sure I would use the Update utility to actually update the BIOS,
however. There certainly may be other ways to determine which BIOS your
system has. Good luck.

Updated my P4C800E Deluxe the first day MS released the XP network install. No
problems noticed since then. BIOS is 1016.

GLAD to report that the upgrade to Sp-2 appears to have gone without a hitch
in 30 minutes flat--now to deal with a few seemingly minor security issues
and get rid of that damned Messenger AGAIN!

...and get rid of that damned Messenger AGAIN!

Of the many different techniques for stamping out Messenger, the most
effective one I used was recommended on a web site I once found (but
have since lost :).

I can't remember the details, but it involved some administrative thingee
with setting permissions or policies or some piece of jargon like that
:). Basically you allow Messenger to remain on the system to make update
and service packs and wot-not happy, but you tell windows that no one is
allowed to actually run the messenger program. It works great, my setting
survived XP SP2 installation, so I haven't had to fool with messenger in
years (which is why I can't remember exactly how to kill it :).

This may be the same thing: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302089
(though it wasn't on microsoft.com that I originally found it, but
the gpedit.msc program it talks about sounds familiar).

Yah, doesn't seem to be much problem with P4C800-E Dlx and SP2. Mine
also went in without any issues. As far as the annoying Messenger
goes, I routinely scan my system with "Hijack This" to see what has
stuffed itself into my registry load lines. I simply treat Messenger
like a virus or trojan and use "Hijack This" to remove its load lines.
Takes less than a second to check the box and remove it, and it is
gone for good.

Ender

I applied SP2 to a P4C800-E Deluxe w/ a Prescott 3.0 today and
everything seems to have gone OK. Apparently you must upgrade
the BIOS to 1017 first if you have a Prescott (which I did), and
everything should work. Keeping my fingers crossed!
