P4C800 Deluxe - Strange startup problem

E

Erik Faarlund

I got my P4C800 up and running last week. Everything worked fine. I
upgraded to BIOS 1008.
Today I installed my long awaited water cooling system, put everything
together, and fired it up.

During startup (before the OS starts loading), it sais that "Overclocking
Failed", and gives me the option to either enter Setup, or start the
computer with default settings. If I choose the latter, it starts normally.
But if I choose a restart, It won't.
If I choose shut down, it does, but the next time I turn it on, It won't
start again. If I instead enter Setup, and save any changes, It won't
start.

In other words: Every second time I try to boot the computer, it won't. And
when I can start it, it will therefore say that "Overclocking Failed", and
reset anything I have set.

I am not overclocking the computer. All temperatures are normal, Since I am
watercooling, it also gives me a warning about cpu fan. But connecting a
cpu fan changes nothing regarding the start up problem.

I am running a s-ata raid 0, but have tried without. I have reset the RTCLK
without any changes.

Have anyone seen this problem before? Any idea what to do?

Thanks for any tip!

Read the manual. the P4C800 is a very complex motherboard and setting it
up properly is not exactly intuitive. This particular section on "overclocking"
is not all that easy to understand other than to make sure that the settings are
matching what is the actual hardware vis-a-vis CPU, RAM speed, FSB,
etc. That is, read slowly through Section 4.1.1.

Hi!
Scan the ram with memtest. I've had a similar problem and the secondo stick
of ram was buggy. The ram is Corsair Xms 3200 and, you won't believe it, i'm
at the thrid stick and it's still a buggy one!
Good luck,

The BIOS needs reconfiguring, when you upgraded to 1008, it turned the
setting back to defaults. This is a feature, not a bug, oddly.

Check your RAID settings.
Check you DDR timings.
Check your boot sequence. You could be booting to an empty DVD or legacy
floppy and that's it. Your HD might not even show. Tweak your BIOS and try
again.

Goodluck, Brad
