Overwrote file...any way to get previous?

Good afternoon.

I am running Word 2003 on Windows 2000.

I accidentally saved over a document, instead of saving it under a new name.
Is there any way to retrieve the original document?

Assuming you already closed the file... In Word, if the "Always create
backup copy" option is checked in Tools | Options | Save, then the
previous version of the document will be saved with a .wbk filename
extension in the same folder as the current version of the document. If
you don't have this option enabled, and if you don't have a recent
backup (now you know why it's important to make backups regularly and
frequently), then you're probably out of luck. You might try one of the
many available Windows file recovery utilities, although they rarely
work for me.

Yes. Word was closed down. I must've clicked the save button previous to
closing down Word, because the "Document has changed...want to save?" option
didn't show up.

Did you close that file yet? If not, do multiple undos.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'm out of luck. Thanks for the info on
the backup copy option. Have a wonderful weekend.
