Can I retrieve orig doc if revised & saved without renaming?

I was working on a large project but also needed a simplified version so I
saved my original doc, then revised, deleted and chopped most of the original
intending to save it under another name; however, I inadvertently hit "save"
and not "save as" and overwrote my original with the chopped version. Does
anyone know if it is possible to retrieve the previously saved document?

If you haven't closed the document, you should be able to use Undo (Ctrl+Z)
repeatedly to restore the original version. Then Save As.

Would this answer also apply to an Excel 97 xls file? I was guilty of much
the same thing. I do have a printed copy. Might I be able to retrieve it
using an OCR program? (No formulas involved; only text information.)

I'm not sure how your question is similar to the one that you hijacked
but....
It's worth trying. If you scan it in and the results aren't what you want,
you've only lost a few minutes of time.

Hijacked?? What I meant was that the original saved Excel file was opened,
lots of entries cleared (changes) made for intended purpose of creating
another file with similar column headers, etc., and before I was ready to
save it, the Autosave popup came up (I had it turned on) and I hit save
without even thinking about it until just after it was saved. In this
respect, my question is exactly like the original one which regarded a Word
document. But it appears the answer given by Stephan Blom (repeatedly using
Ctrl-Z to undo the last save before closing the document) will not work for
Excel xls files, as I tried it unsuccessfully... Or did I miss something?

Anyway, I will try the scanning/OCR technique. And thanks for the reply.
