Is there a simple way to overline characters in equations except for using
CTRL+9 to insert field braces?

Install a font that includes overbar characters. The default set has a few
in any case.

Ctrl-9 doesn't do anything. Presumably you have in mind using EQ fields --
you need to set up the field only once for each character: you can then
define the results as autotext entries.

See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Overbar.htm for several methods, all
of which, however, will require fields. For heavy-duty equations, use the
Equation Editor.
