My question is if I have retail version of vista ultimate 64 bit and on the
system I have vista home premium 32 bit can I overwrite it with a install
I am trying to utilize the 6 gig of ram installed on the system

Will this allow me to overwrite it and not lose all the programs or data on
the hard disk

Yes, simply boot into Windows Vista Home Premium, insert the disk and choose
the upgrade option when prompted during the initial phase of setup. This
will preserve your personal files, settings and applications.

NO -- You can NOT overwrite ('upgrade") the 32-bit version of Vista with the
64-bit version and preserve your files and settings.

No, not possible. The only way to go to 64-bit Vista is via a clean
installation.

What applications are you running that you need 6GB of RAM for? Unless
you run particularly memory-hungry applications, letting Windows see
all your RAM will make no difference to your performance.

I am new to this not sure where the news group is located , Thank you for
the help

Now I have, multiple documents , in many programs , along with many chat
programs open

Now I have the memory to use in the system already, Will the system use the
memory with out letting windows know it is installed ?

I just realized the post said 64 bit, so it should actually be a clean
install.

Windows utilizes memory, you have understand, when your computer boots, its
loaded into main memory, that means it will be using some of that 6 GBs of
RAM.

Sorry, I don't understand this sentence. To what does it refer?

Please answer the question I asked: "What applications are you running
that you need 6GB of RAM for?" I still haven't heard anything that
suggests to me that 6GB would be any better for you than 2GB.

Andre, as I said; you WON'T read posts!

I just have basic programs and MS office and adobe , but alot of documents
Now As to exactly what the names of the other software are I am unsure
I am getting ready to be able to manage client accounts, for international
business , the machine is for multiple operations , It will be downloading
saving video files as a DVR , for project documents saved into power point ,
adobe
I will be using Ms office , adobe , company does webniars and Web chat
conference calls [ you wil get sometimes many different web conference calls
at one time ] , a We will be using your array of chat programs all open for
complete access from the clients
I will also be using business management software as well and banking
management software, Investment client manging software
My signatory partner stated to me that one of the programs uses between 1.5
g to 2 .5 of memory by itself
He is running 8 gb on his machine with no hiccups or stalls or freezes
I was trying to work on a limited budget , did not know that Vista HM Prem
32 limited the memory usage / I should have done research hind sight

Was trying to solve it , A business partner has a ultimate retail copy he
was going sell me but if I cannot use it

Okay first and foremost you will want to back up your documents and anything
else you cant bear to lose. From there you should go and download all the
drivers for your system. The 64 Bit drivers at that and burn then to a
CD/DVD. The main ones will be Ethernet (Network adapter), Chipset, Video,
Sound. That should cover just about all your major bases. The rest can be
found once you get online again with Vista 64Bit.

Then after you check for all the drivers needed you need to check that the
applications you are going to use are also 64 Bit compatible. Not all
applications that run on Vista 32Bit can run on Vista 64 Bit. Now if you
have to download the 64 Bit versions and save them as well to a CD/DVD.
After all that get a application called GParted. It is a free application
and a LiveCD. Burn that to disc.

Reboot with that in the Tray and run it. Format yoru PC with GParted and
either 1.) Create a parition for just the Vista OS (Should be at least 60GB
to allow for application installs) and then create a 2nd partition for the
personal data you are going to put back on. or 2.) format the drive as a
whole.

After all that you can start the process of installing Vista 64 Bit.
Because you can not upgrade or use anything from your current settings.

The number of documents is irrelevant. Based on what you say here, as
I suspected, it is highly unlikely that you will see *any* performance
gain by being able to use 6GB. Your applications more typically need
1-2 GB of RAM, not 6. Contrary to what many people repeat, more RAM is
*not* always better. After you have enough RAM to reach the point of
not doing any paging, more RAM does practically nothing for you. For
your applications, 2GB is probably sufficient, and any more is just a
waste. You only need more than that if you run especially
memory-hungry apps, doing things like photo- and video-editing. Going
to 64-bit Vista isn't needed.
