Outlook2003 CRASH: fault in outlook.exe, stamp 42cacc7d; fault in msmapi32.dll, stamp 42cdb657

R

Rachid Finge

I must admit I'm quite new to usenet, especially to Microsoft's groups on
it. As far as I can see, it seems like a lot of friendly yet highly
skilled people come around often here, so I sincerely hope someone can
help me with this problem.

Actually, the problem I'm having with Outlook 2003 has been discussed here
earlier:
http://groups.google.nl/group/micro...e6caf2?q=msmapi32.dll&rnum=5#0d2e521349e6caf2

However, this thread never came to an satisfactory end, ie. no solution
was found.

So, here's the situation.

A few weeks ago, when I tried to launch Outlook 2003, it crashed as soon
as it wanted to check for e-mails. Since in my case Outlook 2003 does this
immediately after launch, the program crashes just right after I started
it.

The crash looks like this:

I've tried a lot of things to fix this problem, including Detect and
Repair, reinstall of Office 2003, upgrading to Service Pack 2, creating a
new mail profile, removing all mail accounts from Outlook and recreating
them, creating a new PST file, removing outcmd.dat, running scanpst.exe,
running in Safe mode (crashes too),and, finally, reinstalling Windows.
That's right, I reinstalled Windows, and unfortunately, it didn't solve
the problem.

I've noticed that this problem occurs the second time I try to
send/receive. So, basically:

1. Having a clean profile and pst file: create a new account.
2. Do Send/Receive, all goes well.
3. After first sync completed, do Send/Receive again.
4. *crash*

From that point on, Outlook will always crash as soon as the user tries to
do Send/Receive. I've enabled the Logging feature in Outlook to try and
get more insight in the problem. After the first Send/Receive, ie. the one
which goes without a crash, these are the last lines in the log file:

2006.01.06 21:52:33 POP3 (mail.xxxxxx.nl): End execution
2006.01.06 21:52:33 xxxxxx.nl: ReportStatus: RSF_COMPLETED, hr = 0x800ccc90
2006.01.06 21:52:33 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation completed

At the second attempt, where the crash occurs, there actually barely is
logging:

2006.01.06 23:36:04 <<<< Logging Started (level is LTF_TRACE) >>>>
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation started (flags = 00000001)
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: UploadItems: 0 messages to send
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation completed
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: Synch operation started (flags = 00000030)
2006.01.06 23:36:04 xxxxxx.nl: DoPOPDownload(flags = 00000030, max msg =
ffffffff): full items

That's all. I've contacted my hosting provider. They confirmed that during
these scenarios, Outlook crashes *before* actually having contact with the
POP3 mail server, ie. my IP number doesn't appear in any of their log
files at the times Outlook crashed.

As mentioned earlier, Safe mode fails too. The only way to actually get
into Outlook is to launch it and the quickly set Work Offline. It will
prevent Outlook from trying to do a Sync. During that time, I can access
every part in Outlook and am able to view all messages, etc.

Perhaps it's worth to mention that the POP3 server I'm using stores nearly
15,000 e-mail messages. While creating an account, I always set the flags
"Leave messages on server" and "Remove from server when removed from
Deleted Items". This enables me to use my webmail client elsewhere, even
if Outlook is running at home.

Finally, some relevant system specs: AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 1024 MB RAM,
WinXP SP2 US, Office2003 SP2 UK.

Well, I hope someone can help me out with this. I usually can fix all the
things myself, but this one's really bigger than me! If there's any extra
information wanted, I'll be happy to give it.

Rachid, I have just installed Office 2003 and I seem to have the same problem
in Outlook as you. When I launch it, it immediately tries to sync the files
with my ISP email server and then just hangs. Currently on 2 of 6 incoming
emails. Earlier it had worked for just one new incoming item. I have
iHateSpam filter on as well so I might try and uninstall that. Also, check
your Firewall and Security software for any blockages etc. I ran Outlook 2000
for the last 5 years without any problems whatsoever. This is extremely
annoying. I can't offer any solutions but I'll keep trying and let you know
if I find anything.

I got exactely the same error with Outlook 2003 this sunday even if I was using it since more than a year without any error. I do not understand ! I am using an email address from yahoo mail that isredirected to Outlook (I am not a specialist). But I reinstalled microsoft office and all the service packs. The problem is still alive.

If any of you have a solution it will be very welcome.

Thanks

I have the same issue...i had to turn off my auto send/rec in order to prevent it from crashing. At first it sent an error report, now it just crashes. With the send /rec off it's fine, but when i try to send/rec it crashed immediately!

Same issue, here is what I did and fixed the problem. !!!!

1.) Go into webmail (which my mail server gives me) and delete the 13,000 or so messages in there. (yes, work wise haha all came in within the past few days)

2.) problem still existed.

3.) quickly when opening outlook went to the down arrow next to send receive, the "more" link, then "send receive settings", then "disable scheduled send receive".

The first time I did #3 I think I missed it by milliseconds. The second time got it. Now, I can open outlook, without send / receive happening, and outlook is running.

4.) BACKUP OUTLOOK for worst case scenario now that it's working! (Import / export .PST)

5.) BACKUP OUTLOOK RULES. Tools > Rules and Alerts > Options > Export Rules

6.) For extra saftey, shut down outlook and copied the original PST to another directory. (2.7 Gigs)

7.) Removed the main email account from Outlook. Restart, then add the exact email account back in again.

Send / Receive now works. No crash in 60 minutes - I believe the problem is eliminated.

Also for notes... I was going to archive my emails too. However, this was not ideal as I use old emails a lot, and it turned out to not be necessary. Simply put

Here is the exact error I see in the Event Viewer (start > control panel > administrative tools > event viewer > application)

Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.8010.0, stamp 43d16d53, faulting module msmapi32.dll, version 11.0.8002.0, stamp 4373069d, debug? 0, fault address 0x00021f57.
--

And yes, this happend on two different computers THE SAME DAY. One at work, one home.

------------------
REMOVING THE EMAIL ACCOUNT THEN ADDING IT AGAIN FIXED THINGS. Possibly deleting the 13,000 messages from the server helped too.
------------------

If you don't hear an update from me within 24 hours - my home machine will be fixed the same way.

Good luck to others with this problem. It's actually somewhat easily fixable.

Oh yes, Windows XP Pro, Outlook 2003 on both computers. It's definately an issue with Outlook and the account and the account sending/receiving emails.

Another note - I started getting duplicate emails in my inbox last week. This could have been a sign of this to come.

Outlook 2003 MSMAPI32.DLL Problem

Andrew,

I am having the same problem with Outlook 2003...it crashes when sending/receiving. MSMAPI32.DLL error. I tried your fix...remove email account...restart...re-enter email account. It worked fine for 1 day and now the problem has returned. "Microsoft Office Outlook has encounted a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." with the error report indicating MSMAPI32.DLL.

Has the problem returned for you? Any advice?

Thanks,
George

Nope, no more crashes for me. My home computer is just fine as well.

Make sure to log into your webmail account and delete all messages there (if you can). Or get rid of 95% of your email on that server.

I believe it has somethign to do with this too. If you don't have webmail - contact your ISP asking for them to find out / help you fix this. I suspect you have a very large amount of files in your inbox on the POP server. If you can fix that, then try the unlinking the email account again and then linking it back up.

EUREKA! Kill the OST file and re-create

This may be a long shot but I've just had a customer with the same problem. many of the comments talked about problems with sync'ing.

I've seen the OST file becoming corrupt as the problem several times in the past.

Just go to %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\<profilename>.ost

That's the default location for the OST file to be stored.

Rename it. It's an offline copy of what's on the Exchange server. The OST is created when you have that "Cached Exchange Mode" box checked on the outlook profile. When you log in again, Exchange will re-download everything.

The draw back is that all of your email will be re-downloaded to your PC to create a new .ost file and may chew up your bandwidth for a long period of time depending on how big your entire mailbox is!

Once the mail is re-downloaded and new OST (i.e. full syncrhonization is complete) and everything works ok for a couple days, you could safely delete the old .ost file.

Hopefully this helps.
