Outlook won't connect to exchange server

Good Day,

We're running exchange 2003 and outlook 2003. We have an issue where outlook
won't connect to the exchange server the first time you open up outlook.
Error " exchange server unavailable"

Users have to click on retry 3 or 4 times before it connects and everything
is normal after it connects.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi Kathleen,

Yes the server is located on a different VLAN. The two sites are connected
via a 10MB fibre line. There is not firewalls between the two sites except a
switch.

Users are running terminal server and they have no issues with that. It's
only the users that are running outlook on their local systems have issues
connecting to the server through the VLAN.

There's no router between the different sites? Are those using their local
systems using XP? Do they have the Windows Firewall turned on or off? Have
you tried adding the Exchange server name and IP to their hosts file?

I will try thehost file and let you know. THere is no router and xp firewall
is turned off
