Outlook using POP3 server to send email

Jeff

I just recently re-formatted my hard drive, and installed
Outlook 2003. When I send certain emails, they go through
fine. But when I send others (it seems as those that I
reply to or that I am forwarding), I get an error
message: "Task 'incoming.verizon.net-Sending' reported
error (0x800CCC78): 'Unable to send the message. Please
verify the e-mail address in your account properties. The
server responded: 553 Authentication is required to
send mail as <my email address>'.

Also, when the send/receive progress box comes on, there
are 4 lines:
"incoming.verizon.net" "sending" "errors"
"incoming.verizon.net" "receiving" "completed"
"verizon" "sending" "completed"
"verizon" "receiving" "completed"

It would seem as though Outlook is trying to send mail
through the POP3 server instead of the SMTP server.

All of my settings are fine; I do a test message, and it
sends and receives fine. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Jeff

I have one account set up on my desktop (there are
other "desktops" on my computer, each with 1 account, but
I don't think the other "desktops" are having problems
with theirs").

As for the "from" field, the only "from" in the forwarded
or replied to email is the address of the original sender
contained in the forwarded message i.e. From: ******
Sent: ****** To: ***** Subject: *****

Make sure your account is properly authenticating to the outgoing server.
Click Tools>E-mail Accounts>View or change existing e-mail accounts>Next.
Select your account. Click Change>More Settings, then the Outgoing Server
tab. Make sure the "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" box
is properly checked or unchecked, as your account requires. For high-speed
services, the box usually requires being checked. Moreover, if your
incoming and outgoing server require different authenitcation, this is where
you enter the outgoing server username/password information.

I have Verizon DSL, and all of my settings are correct.
The test email works, and I have the box checked for the
server requires authentication. Could it be a problem with
the ISP? I did a search in the newsgroups through google
with the "0x800CCC78" error, and there seems to be a lot
of Verizon users experiencing the same problem. However,
Verizon tech support tells me it's a problem with Outlook.

It could, I'm sure, but if you have your server settings correct, there's no
way to prove it.
