Outlook Sync

T

Tim Stone

It seems such a simple and yet very important task. I have a desktop, and a
laptop, both with Vista Ultimate and both with Office 2007 Professional.
When I travel, I want my Outlook data on the desktop to be identical to the
laptop, and when I return, I want them to again match. This is a simple
sync proceedure.

Microsoft provides software that will sync my Outlook to my smartphone. Why
won't they provide software to allow two licensed copies of Outlook to be
synchronized ?

I have found two products that claim to work, but they don't successfully
transfer all of the data.

At one point Microsoft advertised this was going to be a feature of Vista,
but apparently they dropped the idea. I don't really want to work through
Exchange Server ... I just want two copies of Outlook to sync.

Anyone have some successful solutions to this ? I really don't want to buy
more software that doesn't work.

Thanks.

You can use the Smartphone to do that, if you want.

Do not want to advertise, but our c9ompany- has released several tools
for PC to PC synchronization... these solutions are quite new- so we
are still working on improvements. I would sugegst to try
http://outshare.4team.biz/?pcode=607180190pwkkd3, as it gives not only
PC to PC, bu web access to the synchronized data, and the latest
version of the tool works quite stable :)

Also you can try, if you haven't tried earlier http://sync2.4team.biz/?pcode=607180190pwkkd3...
it has several problems, but new version has been released recently...
working for me ( I use USB to store that data)

I can answer your questions- feel free to contact :)

Vista use a very nice tool for smartphones synchronization, but it will not
sync two copies of Outlook between a laptop and desktop. I actually bought
a Windows phone ( Treo 750 w ) just to try that software, and then I tried
to use it with the laptop. I did a lot of online research, and apparently
that feature was in the original design spec and then dropped because they
couldn't get it working in time for a Vista release.
Which ones are those?

SyncPst for Outlook is the one I've been using recently. It transfers from
the desktop to the notebook, but fails to properly bring data from the
notebook to the laptop.

The other is EZ Outlook Sync and they told me it would work with Office 2007
and Vista but it wasn't consistent.

I took a look at those. I don't want an online solution. I believe I
tested the 2nd option once before and it wasn't working well.

My previous program worked fine with 2003 / XP, but the update to 2007
Office and Vista created problems for all of those products.

I'll have to play with that. ActiveSync works well for it between two XP
systems, but I haven't tried my Vista system yet. If I get a chance to do
so, I'll tell you what happens.

I'm not going to get the chance to do this until the first full week of
August.

I also have a wirelesssyc phone that works just great, so though there
would be an easy program for the laptop, but am also having trouble.
I am trying the Sync2 software - bought it after trying the demo
version (which only does 1 file so is not not helpful) - but it seems
very problematic. Am currently synching my laptop to a 1 gb .pst file
on my workstation, and it has been running for over 8 hours, is now
using over 1.3 gb of memory, but is only about 50% through. Contacted
the company, and they confirmed it was "slow", but this is just awful
and the computer is so bogged down it cannot be used for anything else
while this is happening - had to move my work files to another
computer while this was going on. Supposed to be faster once it is
synched the first time, but I am not holding my breath here. Seems
like there is no ideal solution - tried the Syncpst but that did not
work at all.

Couldn't you use Microsoft's SyncToy to keep the .pst files on both
hosts in sync with each other (i.e., the latest one on whichever host
will overwrite the .pst file on the other host)? Rather than do a data
export/import, you end up overwriting the older .pst file with the newer
one.

Tim, What was your previous program? I have Office 2003 & XP pro on both of
my machines.

The problem with that is you don't always get a chance to sync immediately.
So, if I go out for a couple of hours, and then come in, I might have to
check email quickly on my desktop before I have a chance to sync ...

Its not a problem with MS sync programs that work with PDA's ... just when
trying to do the exact same process on the laptop / desktop combo.

Its not an issue with Office 2003 and XP.

However, my computers are now Vista / Office 2007 ... and I have no interest
in reverting back !

Windows Mobile Device Center works great between a MS PDA/Smartphone, and
Outlook 2007. I'm just disappointed that it doesn't support laptops. It is
the perfect solution.

It works on my laptop just fine - I don't understand why you think the underlying architecture of the laptop has anything to do with how the WMDC works.

Milly,

Either you misunderstood my statement, or I have been unable to find any
documentation from Microsoft to support what I want to do.

I purchased a Treo 750wx and used WMDC to sync Outlook 2007 on my desktop
computer to my phone. It worked seamlessly and I really appreciated the
technology.

However, I can find no documentation that shows me how WMDC could do the
same job to sync my desktop to my laptop. Sure I could put WMDC on my
laptop and sync to my phone, but my laptop is my primary mobil device and so
I would like it to sync cleanly with the desktop. I have fully licensed
copies of Office 2007 Professional on both machines, I use Outlook 2007 all
the time, and both computers have Windows Vista Ultimate.

If you are saying that you can sync your desktop and laptop with WMDC, plese
give me a link to the documentation to support that procedure. In my
extensive search through Microosft and other resources, all I could find was
documentation that stated this was an original design plan for Vista, but it
was removed due to technical difficulties prior to the actual release of
Vista.

That's not possible, but with a smart phone, you don't need it. You use the
smart phone to keep the laptop and desktop in sync. You sync the smart
phone to both your laptop and your desktop. I do it all the time (but as I
said earlier in the thread, I haven't tried it with Vista yet, although I
intend to).

WMDC is already on your laptop, since it's running Vista.

Brian,

I have Vista Ultimate on two computers, and WMDC was a download. It was not
in the original install. Its not a problem because there is no charge.

To sync a PC to a Cellphone to a Laptop is not at all efficient. One piece
of sync software should be able to keep all devices current.

Perhaps, but that's not Microsoft's approach at this time. One must live
with what exists until what one wishes becomes available.
