Outlook stops downloading e-mail

I'm using Outlook in Office Professional edition 2007 & from time to time it
just stops downloading e-mail, however this problem has been going on for
years & every version of Outlook I've ever owned & I've pretty much owned
every version. What causes this problem? The computer stays up & running
pretty much 24/7. I'll reboot from time to time, especially when this issue
pops up. Why does this happen?
