OUTLOOK question for RUSS

G

Guest

I'm assumming this is going to get to Russ, since, after reading numerous
posts, it seems as if he is the authority on Outlook; but if anyone can help,
I'd greatly appreciate it.
I have read KB article 287563
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287563&Product=ol2002)
And... when I attempt to install the Outlook Address Book Service, there is
no "Additional Address Books", after I click "Add" under "View or Change
existing directories or address books".
Here's the interesting item... I tested it on mine; and the above mentioned
option was not there; however, I was able to right click on my contacts
folder, and I was able to "show this folder as an email address book". I
then was able to view my contacts whenever I clicked the "To" button, when
sending a new message.
HOWEVER, when I did this on my client's machine, they received the same
error message they have been receiving:
"Unable to complete operation. A fatal error has occurred in Outlook".

What do I need to do to fix this????

Thank you!

Luke

When the option is not there, it simply means you have already added the
Outlook Address Book Service to the profile. This problem is completely
different than simply not having configured the Outlook Address Book
Service. You have a seriously corrupted Outlook profile and we have no
information on what steps created the problem, what Outlook version you are
using, nor what information store you are using. Without that information,
no one can hazard a guess.

Wait... that option to add an "additional address book" is there. stilll i
get the window saying there's a fatal error. Does this still mean that the
file is corrupted?

So at what point exactly do you get this "fatal error" message and do you
get any specific information either in the error message or in Event Viewer?
Have you contacted your Exchange Administrator about potential problems with
your mailbox?

They get the error whenever they attempt to Navigate to "All Contacts" in
their Address Book.
Bad News... I'm the IT Admin. This is new to me, as well as exchange. FYI,
We do not rely on exchange right now because we are running SBS 3003 on a
lone server... So the exchange is truncated.

Thanks again, Russ.

I ran into this same problem today with one of my customers. I wanted
to narrow down if this was a profile issue, so I logged on as myself
and Outlook does the same thing. The version is 2003 (11.6568.6568).

When you click on "To" and then chose "contacts," this error comes
back: The address list could not be displayed. An unsrupported
restriction was passed into an IMAPITable method. Then when I clcik
"To" and then "All Contacts" this error comes back" Microsoft Office
Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I have only seen this error on one machine thus far. On my workstation
it is fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook twice now and
I still get the same error.

I don't understand how this is a 'hijack.' I cam here for help - This
is the only place that I have seen this error while trying to find an
answer.

And "relevant" details? How many more details can I give you? I wrote
down the exact error message.

My only alternative is to reimage this machine. I was hoping someone
could provide an answer of something else I could do, but all I got
was a crass reply.

Thanks for the non help. I will not post any more in these forums of
same problems I have that someone else has. Apparently, Russ, you
don't believe me.

When the option is not there, it simply means you have already

I ran into this same problem today with one of my customers. I wanted
to narrow down if this was a profile issue, so I logged on as myself
and Outlook does the same thing. The version is 2003 (11.6568.6568).
When you click on "To" and then chose "contacts," this error comes
back: The address list could not be displayed. An unsrupported
restriction was passed into an IMAPITable method. Then when I clcik
"To" and then "All Contacts" this error comes back" Microsoft Office
Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I have only seen this error on one machine thus far. On my workstation
it is fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook twice now and
I still get the same error.- Hide quoted text -

Oh, just wanted to add that when I find my answer (without reimaging.)
I will be sure to reply back to the OP since Russ can't seem to help

What Russ was getting at is that you piggybacked your issue on a thread that may or may not be related to the same issue. Since you and the original poster have different error messages, my hunch is that it is not related.

Suggestion: When you have a specific error message, for best results in any discussion forum, search the Microsoft Knowledgebase for that error and search forums like this one for messages dealing with the same error. If you don't find any information on your exact error message, start your own topic thread -- don't reply to someone else's post -- providing as many relevant details as possible. In this case, those details would include what mail account(s) and address list(s) your Outlook mail profile contains, since Contacts could mean the user's own Contacts folder, as exposed in the Outlook Address Book, or a public folder or GAL address list.

Given that you apparently are seeing the same error regardless of the mail profile or user login and have already reinstalled Office, reimaging the machine does sound like the next step. You might want to try a disk repair utility first, though.

Thank you , Sue. Your reply was courteous and I appreciate that. I was
piggy backing on this one because I do have the same error as the OP
-

" They get the error whenever they attempt to Navigate to "All
Contacts" in
their Address Book. "

I also included another error that I received when clicking just
"contacts." (The OP didn't list that, or he may not have had that.)

I would have been happy to start a new topic, but didn't think that
would be the right thing to do as my error was basically the same as
this OP.

Thank you for your time.

Sue, you're right. I forgot to put "Fatal Error" in front of this:
"Microsoft Office
Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close."

But the OP didn't have the second part in that either so maybe they
are different. Usually when I see the "Fatal Error" message it is
always accompanied by
"Microsoft Office
Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I am going to run Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the pc today
before I reimage. I hope that will work. I just hate reimaging --- I
like to exhaust all of my resources before I reimage anything.

Again,

I thank you for your help.
