Outlook Opens looking for Exchange Server

Charles W Davis

A computer club member wishes to used Outlook so that she can sync with her
Palm.
Environment: Windows XP Pro SP2, IE 7, Windows Genuine Advantage installed.

Symptom One:
When Outlook is opened, the program is looking for Exchange Server. She is
using a laptop with no exchange server available.

Symptom Two:
When performing Office Update, three items did not install all with error
code 0x8024402C:
1. Update for Outlook Junk Mail (KB943591)
2. Office 2003 update SP3
3. Security Update for CAPICOM (KB931906)

I suspicion that Office 2003 is a 60 day trial that has never been
activated. Are my suspicions valid?

For the Exchange server thing, have the member use the Mail applet in the
control panel to remove this account type from the mail profile and add
whatever type account s/he needs. (Top button is where POP3/IMAP/Hotmail
account info can be added. The middle button is where s/he can add a
personal folder file [needed to support a POP3 account(s)]. The bottom
button is where you create multiple mail profiles. Profiles are kinda like
OE's identities.)

Only thing I can find for 0x8024402C indicates a problem with proxy
settings. At this point, i would suggest s/he download the full version of
Office 2003 SP3 from www.microsoft.com/downloads and try applying manually.
If SP3 fails then it is easy enought to start the update with additional
command line switches to have a log file written to determine why an update
is failing to apply.
