I was writing an email in Outlook, I momentarily left the email and clicked
on something in another folder, which had come with OL, then the whole email
vanished and I can't find it.

Have you checked your Drafts folder?

Assuming you have little icons visible at the bottom of your screen and your
message is not there, try checking Drafts.
